In this novel pursuit of electric vertical takeoff and landing, certain names are, naturally, more readily discussed. Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation have, with considerable fanfare, established themselves at the forefront of this emerging mode of conveyance. One observes, however, that the quietest contenders are not always the least ambitious.
Indeed, another company, somewhat less inclined to self-promotion, directs its energies toward providing this innovative service to discerning travelers. It is a name which those engaged in the more thoughtful consideration of this industry would do well to remember.
A Company Taking Flight with Prudence
Vertical Aerospace, a British company scarcely five years established, proceeds with a degree of circumspection not always evident in its more vocal competitors. Like Joby, which has secured the patronage of Delta Air Lines, and Archer, allied with United Airlines, Vertical Aerospace benefits from a significant connection – that of American Airlines. It is a partnership founded, one suspects, on a shared appreciation for both innovation and a secure investment.
In 2021, American Airlines announced intentions to procure up to 250 of Vertical Aerospace’s aircraft, a commitment representing a potential expenditure of one billion dollars, with a further option for one hundred more. A most substantial demonstration of confidence, and one which, it is to be hoped, will prove mutually advantageous. Nor is American Airlines the sole admirer of Vertical’s designs. The company has also attracted the attention of Bristow Group, a firm specializing in vertical flight solutions. Following an initial understanding in 2021, which included a preorder of 25 aircraft, with an option for 25 more, Bristow has committed to assisting Vertical in launching commercial operations, providing access to its experienced pilots, maintenance facilities, and other essential services. A further order of 50 aircraft, with an option for another 50, solidifies this promising alliance.
One gathers that Vertical Aerospace is not wanting in support. The company currently boasts approximately 1,500 preorders for its Valo aircraft, valued at around six billion dollars. Archer, it is reported, claims a similar order book in 2024. Joby, however, remains discreet regarding its own commitments, a silence which some may find… peculiar.
A Prudent Addition to One’s Portfolio?
Despite its relative lack of ostentation, Vertical Aerospace merits the serious attention of those interested in this evolving sector. The company anticipates launching commercial flights within the United Kingdom by the end of 2028, paving the way for certifications from other regulatory bodies, including, of course, the Federal Aviation Administration. By 2030, the company aims for an annual production capacity exceeding 225 aircraft. A most ambitious undertaking, and one which will undoubtedly require considerable skill and diligence.
Management further projects a gross margin of 20% by 2030, with a view to expanding it to approximately 40% as operations scale. They anticipate operating cash flow exceeding one hundred million dollars. These are, undeniably, optimistic projections, but not, perhaps, entirely unrealistic.
While Vertical Aerospace appears to navigate a promising course, it is essential to acknowledge the inherent risks associated with any investment in a nascent industry. As with Archer and Joby, a degree of caution is advisable. Potential investors would be well-advised to conduct a thorough investigation to determine if an investment in this company aligns with their own financial objectives and risk tolerance. A prudent approach, one might observe, is rarely regretted.
