Sony CEO Says Disney Forced MCU Strategy, ‘No Worries For Avengers’ (Scoop Confirmed)

The MCU’s problems have been pinned on Kevin Feige for years, but that might not be the full story.

Let me tell you, I’m hearing some serious rumblings from Comic-Con. A source of mine overheard a pretty intense conversation between an ex-Marvel honcho and a big-name VFX artist, and the consensus was clear: Disney’s corporate decisions are really the reason the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been struggling lately. It wasn’t just a disagreement; they both seemed convinced the issues stem from the top down.

The discussion was heated, and even though I didn’t hear everything, the main point was obvious: they agreed with James Gunn’s statements that Disney’s leaders made decisions that damaged the brand. The anger wasn’t with the people working at Marvel itself, but specifically with Disney’s leadership.

Tom Rothman Defends Kevin Feige

Now Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman is echoing a similar sentiment.

I was listening to Tom Rothman on Matt Belloni’s YouTube show, The Town, and he really emphasized how much faith he still has in Kevin Feige. He actually goes way back with Feige – he first met him when they were both at Fox working on the X-Men films, and even back then, when Feige was just starting out as an assistant, Rothman clearly saw his potential.

“Never bet against Kevin Feige. He knows what he’s doing,” Rothman said.

Rothman also confirmed that Marvel is making changes to its plans, which I previously reported when news broke that Daredevil: Born Again was being reworked.

They’ve definitely adjusted their strategy, particularly by reducing their focus on television,” Rothman explained. “I believe it was the extensive reach of television and how interconnected everything became that made it hard to feel involved unless you were already ‘in the know’.

Rothman revealed that the decision came from a previous Disney administration. He explained that Bob Iger is a loyal employee and simply followed instructions he was given.

This confirms what I heard. The rapid increase in Disney+ shows and the way movies and TV shows are linked weren’t Kevin Feige’s ideas; they were decisions made by higher-ups.

Rothman gave the order, Marvel complied, and Kevin Feige carried it out, even if he had doubts about the outcome. More recently, reports indicate Feige has removed producers associated with Marvel projects that didn’t perform well, suggesting a significant change in strategy.

Disney Mandates Hurt The MCU, But No Worries For Avengers

Phase Four and Five saw the MCU expand rapidly onto Disney+.

Shows on streaming services started influencing what happened in movies, making it feel like you had to watch those shows to understand the films. This left newer viewers confused and dedicated fans feeling left out. Meanwhile, visual effects artists were overloaded with work, and movies were being made on increasingly short schedules.

Rothman says the current approach originated with Disney’s former management. Kevin Feige followed through with it because it was a company-wide directive. Now, Marvel Studios is reducing the scope of this strategy.

“Less will be more,” Rothman added. “Have no worries for Avengers, guys.”
