James Gunn has proven himself as a skilled director of superhero films, having successfully worked on major franchises for both Marvel and DC. His expertise led Warner Bros. to appoint him as co-CEO of DC Studios, alongside Peter Safran.
Gunn is now leading a big effort to revitalize the DC brand and challenge Marvel’s dominance in the superhero movie world. Given his experience, his opinions on superhero films carry a lot of weight. In a recent interview with GQ, Gunn called the 2016 film Deadpool “perfect.”
He shared that both Deadpool movies are among his all-time favorites. The first film, directed by Tim Miller, stars Ryan Reynolds as a wisecracking, immortal mercenary who frequently breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to viewers.
James Gunn was impressed with how the movie followed his Guardians of the Galaxy films and took comedy even further. He highlighted that its edgy, self-aware humor closely mirrored the original comic books, making it a faithful adaptation.
According to Gunn, the movie excels at staying true to its source material. But it’s not just funny; he also found a surprising amount of genuine emotion within the story.
Despite all the jokes and playful behavior, the film remains relatable and realistic. Gunn specifically praised its ability to balance humor with heart, even adding more emotional depth than the comics themselves. He considers this blend of laughter and sincerity to be remarkable within the superhero genre.
He greatly admired Ryan Reynolds’ performance, comparing him to legendary actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Reeve. Luckily for fans, the series continues to thrive, even throughout the year.
The huge success of Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, which saw the return of Hugh Jackman, has solidified the series’ position as a major force within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. James Gunn’s statement that Deadpool is a faithful adaptation of the comics perfectly explains why the character is so beloved.
Ryan Reynolds has had a very productive year so far. He’s starring in the upcoming action-comedy Mayday with Kenneth Branagh, which will be available on Apple TV+ in September. He’s also reportedly already working on a fourth Deadpool movie. Beyond acting, Reynolds is producing projects through his production company, Maximum Effort, and continues to manage his business interests, like his ownership of the Wrexham AFC football club.
James Gunn is currently busy launching the new DC Universe. After Superman, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, arrives in summer 2025, he’s now working on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
