Okay, let’s talk about Kim Cattrall. Most of us instantly think of her as Samantha Jones from Sex and the City, and rightfully so – it’s an unforgettable performance! But what’s really impressive is that she’s been working steadily as an actress for over forty years, and she’s still going strong. Her story actually starts overseas; she was born in Liverpool, England, but grew up in Canada. Back in 1972, she made a big leap – she left high school and moved to the US to chase her acting dreams. It’s a bold move that clearly paid off!
She studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and soon impressed director Otto Preminger, who offered her a five-year film contract. She started her movie career in Preminger’s 1975 action thriller, Rosebud, and then joined Universal Studios as one of the last actors signed under the traditional studio contract system.

Kim Cattrall began her acting career with roles in popular television shows like Quincy, M.E., Columbo, and Starsky & Hutch. She also appeared in several miniseries adapted from John Jakes’ novels and had a guest role on The Incredible Hulk, quickly becoming known as a reliable and adaptable performer.
Looking back at her early career, I was so impressed to see she started landing some really interesting movie roles! I remember enjoying Tribute with Jack Lemmon, and Ticket to Heaven was a fun watch. But she really became a favorite of mine with those cult classics – Mannequin is just pure 80s joy, and Big Trouble in Little China is endlessly rewatchable. It’s cool to learn she was even involved in the creative side of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, helping design her character’s look and even suggesting the name! And it wasn’t just film – she clearly had a strong background in theatre too, with performances in productions like A View from the Bridge, Three Sisters, and Wild Honey. It really shows how versatile she is as an actress.

Kim Cattrall’s career took off in 1997 when she began playing Samantha Jones on HBO’s Sex and the City. The show became incredibly popular worldwide, running for six seasons and earning Cattrall five Emmy nominations and four Golden Globe nominations, with a win in 2002.
The role made her incredibly famous and established her as an icon of self-assurance, sensuality, and female strength. The show’s popularity resulted in two movies, Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010), and profitable advertising deals, such as commercials for Pepsi One. Later, Cattrall shared that she didn’t always have a positive relationship with her fellow actors, revealing the difficulties hidden beneath the show’s glamorous surface. Despite this, Samantha Jones became a defining part of her career and continued to influence how the public saw her for years to come.

Kim Cattrall has continued to work steadily in TV and film. Recent projects include starring in and producing the 2020 Fox series Filthy Rich, appearing alongside Hilary Duff in the How I Met Your Father sequel, and roles in streaming shows like Peacock’s Queer as Folk and Netflix’s Glamorous. Though she wasn’t a regular in the Sex and the City revival, And Just Like That…, she made a special guest appearance as Samantha in 2023, delighting fans.
I’ve been following Kim Cattrall’s career for years, and it’s wonderful to see her thriving creatively. It’s also interesting to learn she officially became an American citizen in 2020 – she still holds citizenship in both Britain and Canada, which is fantastic!
Kim Cattrall is married to Russell Thomas and continues to support the arts through fellowships and funding for students at her old high school. She’s also well-known for her work as an activist and for her humanitarian efforts. Still a style icon and a symbol of strength, Cattrall successfully balances her famous role in Sex and the City with a varied and active career in television, film, and theater.
