As a devoted fan of House of the Dragon, I find myself deeply moved by the character of Helaena Targaryen, the enigmatic queen with a unique gift of foresight. Despite her royal status and powerful abilities, she is often overlooked, dismissed, and misunderstood – much like the women in Westeros’ medieval society.
As an ardent fan, I find myself captivated by the epic saga unfolding in House of the Dragon – a tale of competing dragonriders, a power struggle for the Iron Throne, and individuals consumed by Aegon the Conqueror’s visionary dream. In its second season, we delve deeper into the lives of Rhaenyra, Jacaerys, and Daemon as they navigate an age-old prophecy, strategize battles, and mobilize dragonseed lineages to bring it to fruition. Yet, it is the enigmatic figure of Helaena Targaryen, Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and a powerful seer herself, who steals the limelight. Despite her profound insights, the characters seem oblivious to her presence, instead focusing relentlessly on the ancient dream.
Helaena can see the future
Helaena, unlike the renowned Queen Alyssane, does not harbor a desire for ruling. Instead, her primary concern lies in safeguarding her crickets (perhaps an affectionate term for children), family, and loved ones by disseminating enigmatic predictions. The series frequently highlights Helaena’s uncanny gift of foresight, as she regularly foretells events that have yet to unfold or of which she has no direct knowledge.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this:
In the second season of House of the Dragon, Aegon disregards Helaena’s intense phobia of rats and neglects to safeguard her. Her last prediction foretells that King Aegon II will reclaim his throne and Aemond will meet his end at God’s Eye. Additionally, she appears in Daemon’s vision, cautioning him about the White Walkers and the long-term consequences of his decisions. Remarkably, all her predictions have come to pass, suggesting a power beyond what any Green can verify.
The Greens never noticed Helaena’s powers
Helaena, with her unique seer abilities, is highly valuable to the Greens. However, her predictions are frequently disregarded, making her feel powerless and treated like a pawn rather than an active participant.
The Targaryens are known for having seers among them, with Daenys the Dreamer foretelling the Destruction of Valyria and sparing them from disaster. Aegon the Conqueror inherited this prophetic dream and passed it down through the generations, but Viserys, captivated by magic, failed to recognize his daughter Helaena’s abilities. Instead, Viserys, Alicent, and her siblings dismissed Helaena’s gift, ultimately leading to their own demise. Helaena’s prophecies were carried on through the family, but it was Viserys who first noticed her talents.
The Greens have overlooked Helaena’s gift because they are preoccupied with their ambitions and politics, leaving minimal time for connection and conversation. They have limited parental experience, as Alicent was manipulated by Otto Hightower for political purposes, creating a cycle of intergenerational conflict. Aegon, Aemond, Daeron, and Helaena all exhibit different characteristics: Aegon and Aemond are violent, Daeron stays away from the Red Keep, while Helaena isolates herself. This lack of emotional understanding and expression among them has led to a deficit in communication, bonding, and expressions of affection, causing further distance and disconnection within their family.
Moreover, the Green faction gains politically when Helaena is weak and inconsequential. Unwittingly, Alicent’s persistent association with the Greens has compromised her daughter’s position. In truth, Alicent is advocating for a patriarchal system that dismisses women as primarily domestic caretakers.
In the world of Westeros, Helaena is primarily perceived as a queen with no personal autonomy or authority. This oversight prevents others from recognizing her exceptional talents. Instead, she’s often regarded as a mere joke and instrument in this martial, patriarchal society. The awareness of this treatment eventually prompted Helaena to turn against the Greens, but it was too late for anyone to help her cultivate her unique abilities as a dreamer.
Helaena revealed her powers to Aemond
In House of the Dragon season 2, episode 8, Helaena shares a vision with Aemond, who initially doubts her sanity. She claims to have foreseen Aemond betraying King Aegon at Rook’s Rest. This leaves Aemond astonished, but later he realizes she foresaw his own demise instead. He describes the events following this, such as Aegon claiming the throne and Aemond meeting his end at God’s Eye. Despite acknowledging Helaena’s prophetic abilities, Aemond accuses her of engaging in treasonous activities.
It was a stunning moment for Aemond, but it is not without its benefit for the Greens. Aemond finally understands Helaena’s potential. While she insists that even her prophecies cannot change the future, he may attempt to use Helaena’s powers to his advantage in House of the Dragon season 3. Helaena has no interest in working with her brother, who wants nothing more than to see his enemies burned, but she may have inadvertently gifted him a powerful weapon. No one believed Helaena’s prophecies before, but Aemond finally understands that Helaena is a powerful dreamer.
