As a dedicated follower of The Umbrella Academy, I must say that season 4 was a rollercoaster ride of emotions! The way the story unfolded, with the Hargreeves making the ultimate sacrifice to save the universe, was both heartbreaking and hopeful.
As a devoted fan, I’ve just wrapped up binge-watching The Umbrella Academy’s fourth season, a gripping Netflix adaptation from the comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. The series, which first premiered in 2019, has left both critics and viewers spellbound. This latest season unfolds in a timeline crafted by Reginald, six years after the events of the third season’s climax. Despite being apart, the Hargreeves family remains intrinsically linked. The narrative weaves together heart-wrenching moments with glimmers of optimism, painting a future that’s both devastating and inspiring.
Victor, abducted by Sy Grossman, sets out on a mission to locate his daughter, Jennifer. A vase of marigolds holds the key to restoring their powers, which they find among Sy’s belongings. As they unravel the mystery, they learn that Jennifer is under the care of Reginald and that the Umbrellas are being manipulated towards “the cleanse.” It is revealed that Jennifer and Ben are entangled in the apocalypse. To prevent global catastrophe, the Hargreeves make a monumental sacrifice, bringing their narratives to a conclusive close.
Did the Hargreeves siblings die after The Umbrella Academy season 4?
In their perspective, Gene (Nick Offerman) and Jean (Megan Mullally), as the leaders of The Keepers, thought they resided in a fractured sequence of time. They often pointed towards the Umbrella Academy as evidence and supported the idea known as the Umbrella Effect theory. They were convinced that a massive incident called The Cleanse would erase these flawed timelines, ultimately reestablishing the primary one. In their view, Jennifer played a crucial role in this impending event.
Following their failure to halt the purge, Lila informs Five that their relationship had concluded after seven years of drifting through various universes. Later, Five winds up in a subway station and is led to Max’s Delicatessen – a diner managed by his counterparts. It is here where he discovers that he, his siblings, the Marigold kids, and themselves are accountable for bringing about the apocalypse in numerous alternate realities.
On Earth’s soil, the emergence of marigolds and the birth of the Hargreeves family and other offspring brought forth the formation of multiple universes. The establishment showcased diverse scenarios, which were depicted on the walls of the dining area. Among them, five individuals held a shared conviction: the universe could be salvaged if they allowed themselves and their marigolds to be devoured by the cleanse, resulting in their demise and expungement from history.
Following Lila escorting her family, kids, and Claire (Allison’s daughter Claire) to a safer time-line via the subway station, ensuring they boarded the train, she reconnected with the Hargreeves crew. They then waited for the purge to reach them. The closing scene of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ depicted the primary timeline, which was revealed to Viktor in a vision, and multiple characters from previous seasons peacefully coexisting within it. Notably present were Hazel, Agnes, the Swedes, and the Handler. However, the Hargreeves family was noticeably absent, indicating their selfless act had indeed repaired the multiverse at the cost of their own existence.
What happened to Sir Reginald Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy’s final timeline?
The Hargreeves family paid a visit to their father, Reginald, to gain insights into his defense of Jennifer’s town and his promise to assist them in recovering memories related to Ben’s demise in the original timeline. During this meeting, it was revealed that Reginald had established the town primarily for Jennifer’s protection and to keep the Umbrellas and marigold hosts at bay. However, Viktor managed to persuade him against taking immediate action against Ben upon their encounter with him.
In season 4 of The Umbrella Academy, Viktor found himself working closely with Reginald, yet he felt undeserving of such treatment. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to him, Reginald was interacting with Abigail, who played a significant role in the cleansing process. Despite this, he took her words and intentions into account, and as the end of the world approached, he stood by his wife’s side, accepting its inevitable arrival.
In the primary timeline, it remains uncertain whether Reginald is alive or not. If the Hargreeves’ sacrifice and the cleansing event wiped out their entire existence, then it’s possible that Reginald didn’t release the marigolds before his probable demise alongside Abigail when their home planet was destroyed. However, there could be a chance that he might have still traveled to Earth without releasing the marigolds.
Ben & Jennifer turned out to be a deadly combination
In season 4, it was disclosed that Ben perished in the initial timeline when he unveiled a lethal artifact within a container. He assisted Jennifer in her escape, and they briefly touched hands before Reginald fatally shot them. However, this event was expunged from the team’s recollections. In the present timeline, the moment Jen and Ben’s hands meet happens when Gene and Jean collide with the Umbrellas’ van, which triggers the purification process.
Reginald’s spouse, Abigail, developed marigolds and something called “durango,” which led to the extinction of all life forms. Jennifer welcomed durango, and her contact with Ben in both the past and present resulted in the onset of an apocalypse. Despite their attempts, involving Viktor, the Hargreeves were unable to prevent Ben’s demise, leaving him and Jennifer fused into a monstrous being that devoured everything around them.
The Umbrella Academy season 4’s mid-credits scene
In The Umbrella Academy credits, you’ll find snapshots from every season, with an added surprise in the mid-credits scene. This bonus scene takes us back to the tree we saw earlier during the show’s ending, focusing on its roots where eight golden flowers bloom. These flowers symbolize Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Five, Ben (Justin H. Min), Viktor, and Lila. Despite their absence or forgetfulness in the current timeline, these characters are remembered through these flowers as a tribute to their sacrifice.
