‘There Was Negative Energy’: Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson Says Sitcom ‘Protected’ Him From Homophobia

As a dedicated follower and admirer of Jesse Tyler Ferguson‘s journey, I can’t help but feel both inspired and moved by his experiences. The transformation he underwent, from facing homophobic incidents to being embraced and protected by the loving character he portrayed in Modern Family, is nothing short of remarkable. It’s a testament to the power of representation and the impact it can have on individuals and society as a whole.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, openly gay actor from Modern Family, shares that playing the character Mitchell Pritchett offered him a shield against homophobia and fostered self-acceptance. In this popular series, he portrayed a man with high strung tendencies but endearing qualities, who was in a loving partnership with Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet). Together, they raised their adopted Vietnamese daughter, Lily (Aubrey Anderson), with joy and devotion.

In a heart-to-heart chat with the hilarious Nicole Byer on her Dinner’s on Me Podcast, I spilled the beans about my daily grind, pre- and post-Modern Family. I even shared a chilling tale from Sin City (Las Vegas) where I was unfortunately targeted in a homophobic attack, a harrowing experience I’ll never forget.

He disclosed that it wasn’t a violent situation, but there was an unpleasant vibe emanating from a couple who seemed uneasy in his presence and that of his former boyfriend. He also mentioned that upon returning to the city with his spouse, Justin Mikita, he observed a change in the way people received him due to his television appearances.

As I stepped into the role, there was a peculiar sensation of security enveloping me. It was as if I donned an invisible shield, a protective barrier that not only surrounded me but also shared the love my fans held for this character. In other words, it felt like having a coat of armor, a unique shield born from the bond we all share with this beloved figure.

Initially, I felt the same negative vibe, but once people realized who I was, they’d recall me from being, ‘Ah, you’re the one who is gay on TV, and I’m a fan of your show,’ which would lead to a shift in their attitude. Ferguson continued.

The show Modern Family left a substantial mark on Fergusson’s life and the broader world, as the characters he and Stonestreet played offered depth beyond just their sexuality.

I had the privilege of witnessing a heartwarming portrayal of a couple, Mitchell and Cam, whose story revolved around family, job changes, and parenthood. This depiction made their relationship relatable and authentic to viewers, humanizing queer relationships in a way that felt genuine. Over time, they became one of the most cherished on-screen queer couples on network television.

The popular TV sitcom ended following its 11th season in 2020, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating a follow-up series. Ferguson sparked rumors of a spin-off by hinting at an upcoming project. Unfortunately, contrary to expectations, the main cast – consisting of Ferguson, Stonestreet, Julie Bowen, and Ty Burrell – teamed up for a promotional Whatsapp advertisement instead.

The advertisement reveals that Cam stated Hayley shared photos of the twins within a family group chat, which Mitchell discovered he wasn’t included in because his phone struggled with excessive messages. One of their neighbors proposes transitioning to WhatsApp as a solution.
