House Of The Dragon’s Costume Designer Used Rich Colors For Dramatic Finale Showdown Between Alicent And Rhaenyra

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for historical fiction and an eye for detail, I must say that House of The Dragon has truly outdone itself when it comes to set, costume, and character design. Caroline McCall’s work on Alicent and Rhaenyra‘s wardrobes is nothing short of masterful, creating a visual narrative that mirrors the complexities of their relationship.

In the grand historical drama series like House of The Dragon, intricate details and authentic research are woven throughout every element—from scenic design to wardrobe choices. Recently, Caroline McCall, the show’s costume designer, shared her thoughts on designing Alicent and Rhaenyra’s outfits with Variety, emphasizing how these costumes help differentiate between the Targaryen and Hightower families.

In the season 2 finale, enemies-turned-friends maintained both a strong bond and a clear divide throughout their history. They reconnected for a dramatic showdown reminiscent of their initial encounter in season 1. McCall chose to echo this moment by designing costumes in the same colors they wore during that scene, symbolizing their past selves.

She noted that the characters were dressed in colors similar to how they appeared when we first encountered them in Season 1, specifically when Rhaenyra dismounted a gray dragon and Alicent was in blue. McCall then highlighted that Alicent donned prominent green dresses associated with House Hightower, adorned with striking accessories, during the early episodes of Season 2. This wardrobe choice signified her growing power and religious devotion.

In the end, it was Rhaenyra who held the advantage, while the queen dowager was dismissed from the council by her son Aemond and lost her power. This is similar to saying that she appeared weaker in comparison to the true Hightower green, symbolizing her removal of her mask regarding her feelings towards her children, as McCall explained.

When she’s found with Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), she quickly dons a teal robe that truly represents Alicent rather than the political facade she presents. Embroidered designs on one of her gowns, such as dragons breathing fire at each other, symbolize her children Aegon and Aemond’s conflict.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to share my insights on the evolving fashion of the Black Queen character, played by Emma D’Arcy, in House of the Dragon. Initially, her attire reflected a somber, mourning vibe to symbolize her grief. However, as the series progressed, her outfits began to embody the true essence of Targaryen heritage.

To maintain Alicent’s attire as classically feminine and fitting medieval style, and Rhaenyra’s garments authentic to Valyrian culture, she also took the climate into consideration. Since much of the action unfolds in King’s Landing, a place cooler than the Game of Thrones version, this guided her choice of fabrics for the costumes.

House of The Dragon season 2 is now streaming on Max and Jio Cinema.
