Justin Baldoni Opens Up About Filming Challenging Scenes In It Ends With Us; ‘I Wanted It To Be As Real…’

As a devoted admirer of Justin Baldoni, I find myself deeply moved by his unwavering dedication to his craft and the raw emotion he pours into every project he undertakes. His latest work, “It Ends With Us,” is no exception. The way he immerses himself in his roles, especially those that require grappling with intense and sensitive subjects like gender-based violence, is truly commendable.

In a recent interview, Justin Baldoni discussed the emotional intensity of filming certain scenes for his latest romantic drama, “It Ends With Us,” where he both directed and played the character Ryle Kincaid. Baldoni admitted that there were instances when he needed to distance himself after shooting, as those scenes felt incredibly authentic.

More recently, Baldoni graced the premiere of his newest directorial venture in New York City. There, he conversed with The Hollywood Reporter and delved into the process of adapting Colleen Hoover’s 2016 bestselling novel into a film. The actor expressed to the publication that certain scenes involving “gender-based violence” were particularly challenging for him.

Later on, he disclosed that there had been numerous instances where he needed to retreat to a secluded space, often to shed tears or release tension. He also mentioned trying to distance himself from his character and expel the intense emotions associated with it, as they felt incredibly authentic.

The film chronicles Lily Bloom’s (Blake Lively) journey as she leaves behind her troubled past and ventures into a new chapter in Boston. There, she encounters neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid and they develop a strong connection. However, as their bond deepens, Lily finds aspects of him that echo her parents’ relationship.

The actor stated that numerous individuals resemble the character Lily Bloom in real life, and they’ve experienced similar challenges. To make the scenes feel authentic, he aimed for maximum realism. Yet, he acknowledged that portraying these moments was incredibly difficult.

Justin Baldoni elaborated that it was only through the assistance of his intimacy coordinator, stunt coordinator, and co-star Lively that they managed to capture those scenes. He acknowledged that these three ladies were essentially choreographing and guiding the sequences as he concentrated on portraying his character, Ryle. During those instances, he admitted that he wasn’t actually directing; instead, it was these women who were in control.

Besides sharing that he originally intended to direct the project rather than act in it, Baldoni admitted he hadn’t initially entertained the idea of starring. He confided, “I think deep down I yearned to give it a try, but fear held me back, and I didn’t dare to dream or believe I could pull it off.” Noting his reluctance to potentially damage the film or Hoover’s novel, the actor expressed this sentiment.

Afterward, the actor remembered receiving an email from the writer who encouraged him to play the character Ryle, mentioning that this message and her confidence boosted his self-belief. Later on, he contemplated it, discussed it with his spouse, and finally decided to accept the role about two years later during the project’s development phase.

Meanwhile, It Ends With Us will be released in theaters on August 9, 2014.
