FRANKENSTEIN, KPOP DEMON HUNTERS Join Criterion Collection

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and the animated hit KPop Demon Hunters were two of Netflix’s biggest successes in 2025, earning critical acclaim and attracting a large audience. With eleven Oscar nominations between them, both films are now considered contenders for awards and have been added to the prestigious Criterion Collection, which showcases important films from around the globe.

Despite being very different in style, both Frankenstein and KPop Demon Hunters have been well-received by their fans. Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro’s version of Mary Shelley’s famous gothic novel, received nine nominations at this year’s Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and a Best Supporting Actor nod for Jacob Elordi’s performance as The Creature. The film delves into the intricacies of what it means to be human and warns against the risks of unchecked ambition.

The story centers on Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who learns how to create human life. Unfortunately, his creation doesn’t meet his expectations. The film Frankenstein was released in theaters and on Netflix at the same time, quickly gaining almost 30 million views in its first three days.

The movie KPop Demon Hunters has become a massive global success, becoming Netflix’s most-watched film ever with over 500 million views. It’s already won Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Animated Movie and Best Song (“Golden”), and is now nominated for the same awards at the Oscars, where it’s competing against Zootopia 2 for Best Animated Feature Film.

Both films are being recognized for their quality with inclusion in the Criterion Collection, a prestigious group of classic and modern films from around the world, known for including special features like interviews and behind-the-scenes content. Other Netflix films previously added to the collection include Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story. Guillermo del Toro also has several of his earlier films in the Criterion Collection, including recent Academy Award winners like Nightmare Alley, Pinocchio, and The Shape of Water.
