Matthew Perry is well-known for his hilarious portrayal of the Friends character, but the recently deceased actor aspired to be recognized for more than just this role. He played the beloved Chandler Bing for 10 seasons on the iconic NBC sitcom, which also earned him an Emmy nomination, even as he battled his toughest personal challenges.

In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry frankly opened up about his long battle with alcohol and drug addiction that ate away at his happiness. Even though he was surrounded by the best group of co-stars who didn’t leave his side in the worst of times, the Canadian actor revealed that it took him decades to overcome his drug abuse. The addiction was triggered by a Vicodin prescription following a jet ski accident, per ABC News.  

In a 2022 20/20 interview, Perry opened up about his reasons for assisting those battling addiction, sharing a common struggle with many others. He explained to Diane Sawyer that the overwhelming force of addiction is too strong for an individual to fight alone.

After his recovery, the Hollywood star decided to devote his life to assisting and supporting victims. Furthermore, he founded a sober living facility. Recognizing the impact he had as a prominent figure from “Friends,” he vowed to leverage this influence to aid those struggling with addiction.

Furthermore, the actor made it clear that he was willing to do whatever it took to help others, and this is how he wanted to be remembered. Perry emphasized that although “Friends” played a major role in his life, he wished for his compassion towards those battling addiction to be the foremost aspect discussed about him following his passing.

In the interview for the Q With Tom Power podcast in 2022, the celebrity stated, “I don’t want people to remember me for just being a ‘Friends’ actor when I pass away. Instead, I want my acts of kindness and helping others to be what they recall first, and I intend to spend the remainder of my life demonstrating this.”

To further clarify, Perry pointed out that his exceptional quality lies in his unwavering willingness to assist those in need, particularly those struggling with addiction. He put it this way: “My finest attribute, without a doubt, is that if someone approaches me and says, ‘I can’t stop drinking, can you help me?’, I can respond affirmatively and provide the necessary support.”

In my heartfelt memoirs, I couldn’t help but shower praise upon my extraordinary Friends co-stars – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. They were, in essence, the compassionate penguin family that would rally around me when I needed them most, mirroring the real-life bond of a band of penguins protecting their wounded comrade until he was back on his feet again, much like the inspiring stories we often see on ABC. Yes, in this narrative, I was the injured penguin, and they were my lifesavers.

The book mentions times when Perry was often intoxicated, under the influence, or suffering hangovers on set, which his fellow Friends’ cast members frequently noticed. It is reported that Jennifer Aniston expressed significant concern for her close friend and acting partner.

Sadly, it was reported that Matthew Perry passed away in October 2023 at the age of 54, following an incident at his Pacific Palisades home where he was found unresponsive. This tragic news has left the world in shock and sparked a wave of heartfelt tributes and blessings from fans around the globe, who will remember him fondly for many years to come.
