A Fan Fave DC Brainiac Story Won’t Inspire MAN OF TOMORROW

Following months of rumors at the end of 2025, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, officially announced that Brainiac will be the villain in his next film, Man of Tomorrow, a sequel to Superman. Brainiac is widely considered Superman’s second most iconic enemy, and fans have been eager to know which comic book stories Gunn is using as inspiration. Gunn recently revealed one story he won’t be using: the popular 1990s Superman tale, “Panic in the Sky.” He shared this information in a response to a fan on the social media platform Threads, as reported by Comic Book Movie.

In 1992, the Superman comics featured a major storyline called “Panic in the Sky,” where Brainiac invaded Earth. Superman had to gather all available DC heroes to fight him off. This event took place during a popular period for the Superman comics—known as the “Triangle Era”—when the four different Superman titles were linked together with interconnected stories. “Panic in the Sky” happened several months before the famous “The Death of Superman” storyline. It was a large-scale alien invasion story, similar to a blockbuster movie, and many believe it would make a great film. However, James Gunn apparently has different ideas for how to use the villain Brainiac in future projects.

Given that “Panic in the Sky” is essentially a Justice League storyline, James Gunn might not be planning to tackle that particular arc just yet. Luckily, there’s a wealth of other Brainiac stories to choose from – the character has a long history, dating back to 1958. Geoff Johns’ 2008 “Brainiac” storyline is a standout and would be a simple source of inspiration, especially since it was already adapted into the animated film Superman: Unbound. The Brainiac episodes from Superman: The Animated Series also offer great material for a new adaptation. We suspect Gunn’s version of Brainiac will draw heavily from the character’s Silver Age origins, while also incorporating elements from more recent comics. We’ll likely get a clearer picture of his plans when filming for Man of Tomorrow begins this year.
