Sony is developing an animated Venom movie, according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter.
This is a surprising new direction after the original movies, but it allows the character to continue in a way that’s more expansive and imaginative, without being constrained by a limited budget.
Animated Venom movie now in development at Sony
According to the report, the project is still in its initial stages. While details like the release date, cast, and plot are currently unknown, Sony is continuing to develop it as a separate animated movie.
Basically, this doesn’t have a firm release date in theaters yet. It’s an actual project currently in development.
Final Destination: Bloodlines directors set to helm
Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who previously directed Final Destination: Bloodlines, will direct a new animated Venom movie for Sony.
As a film fan, I always felt Venom really shines when it embraces that fun, scary, and chaotic energy – think classic monster movie with a sense of humor. And honestly, animation could really take that to the next level. It would free the filmmakers from the limitations of practical effects and what’s possible with a real-life actor, letting them go completely wild with the creature’s design and movements.
Tom Hardy producing alongside Kelly Marcel and the Venom team
Okay, so I’m really excited about this project because Tom Hardy isn’t just starring, he’s producing too, alongside Kelly Marcel. And the best part? The team that brought the previous live-action movies to life – Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach – they’re all back on board as producers too. That gives me a lot of confidence in how this is going to turn out!
As a big Venom fan, I’m really glad Tom Hardy’s still producing. It means the movie will definitely feel connected to the Venom we’ve already seen, even though he might not be doing the voice of Eddie Brock this time around. They haven’t announced any voice casting news yet, though, so we’ll have to wait and see on that front.
What it could mean for Venom going forward
Venom’s success shows he can lead a series of movies, and using animation lets Sony reinvent the character without the pressure of making another live-action sequel feel the same.
Even though Sony hasn’t revealed any details about the next project – like who will write it, who will star, or when it will be released – the main point is clear: Venom will return, likely in a different form.
