Why Michael Bay Rejected Scarlett Johansson’s Topless Idea

Often overshadowed in Scarlett Johansson’s impressive filmography is Michael Bay’s 2005 sci-fi thriller, The Island. The movie boasts a strong cast, including Ewan McGregor, Djimon Hounsou, and Sean Bean, and tells the story of a man living in a carefully controlled, almost sterile world.

He begins to question his reality and discovers a disturbing truth: he and others like him are clones, grown to be organ donors for wealthy individuals. While The Island is packed with action and explores a dark, futuristic society, Johansson apparently clashed with director Michael Bay during filming.

The disagreement stemmed from a romantic scene with McGregor. To keep the movie rated PG-13, the production team asked Johansson to wear a black bra for modesty, a request she felt didn’t make sense given the scene and the story.

Johansson believed the costume was taking away from the film’s realistic feel. She wanted to perform the scene without a bra, which caused a disagreement with the director. Bay remembered finding her in her trailer, where she strongly protested the costume, declaring she wouldn’t wear the “cheap… bra.” She suggested going without it, but Bay explained that movie rating rules limited his options.

The actress argued it wasn’t realistic for her character to be wearing a structured black bra while asleep, emphasizing that women generally don’t sleep in bras and finding the idea absurd for the scene. She wanted her character to feel genuine and relatable, even within the film’s futuristic setting. However, the director ultimately prioritized getting a wider audience by adhering to the Motion Picture Association of America’s rating guidelines.

While Johansson had a valid point about the illogical choices sometimes made with movie costumes, studio films are often more concerned with achieving a certain age rating than with perfect realism. This disagreement highlights the common tension between an actor’s desire for authenticity and the practical limitations of making a large-scale blockbuster.

Since appearing in that science fiction film, Scarlett Johansson has become a major force in Hollywood. She recently impressed audiences with her first time directing the 2025 comedy-drama, Eleanor the Great. The film, featuring June Squibb as a 94-year-old woman forming a new friendship in New York City, earned Johansson a nomination for the prestigious Camera d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival. She’s also enjoying the huge success of Jurassic World Rebirth, which has earned over $868 million and breathed new life into the Jurassic World series.

Besides directing, she has a lot on her plate. She’s going to direct the new The Exorcist: Martyrs and will also be acting in The Batman: Part II.
