Actor Julian McMahon has tragically passed away at the age of 56 following a secret fight against cancer. His wife, Kelly McMahon, announced the heartbreaking news to Deadline, expressing that “Julian cherished life, his family, friends, work, and fans. His greatest aspiration was to bring happiness to as many people as he could.
She requested solitude while the family mourns, yet she invited fans to keep experiencing happiness by cherishing the memories he created.
Julian McMahon hails from Sydney, Australia, born on the 27th of July, 1968. His dad, Billy McMahon, held the position of Prime Minister of Australia from 1971 to 1972. Before diving into acting, he initially pursued a career in modeling.
Initially, he graced the screens of Australian daytime dramas such as “The Power, The Passion” and “Home and Away” in the late ’80s and early ’90s. His big-screen debut came in 1992 with the movie “Wet and Wild Summer!”. After that, he transitioned to Hollywood, starring in American daytime soap operas like “Another World”.
Afterward, he transitioned to prime-time television, appearing in series such as Profiler and garnering greater recognition with his portrayal of the demon Cole Turner on Charmed across three seasons. However, Julian’s major breakthrough occurred with the FX drama Nip/Tuck, where he starred as Dr. Christian Troy. This series ran for six seasons and even netted him a Golden Globe nomination.
Dylan Walsh, a fellow star on “Nip/Tuck,” expressed his shock to Deadline, saying, “I can’t believe it. We navigated the same journey and I cherished him. My sympathies are with Kelly, Maddy, and Jules. Even though I know you’d want me to say something to cheer you up – all those secret jokes, all those years you stood by me, and oh, the laughter! My thoughts are with you. Rest in peace.
Following his role in “Nip/Tuck”, Julian starred as Jess LaCroix in CBS’s “FBI: Most Wanted” for three seasons until his departure in 2022. The head of the FBI franchise, Dick Wolf, expressed his sorrow: “We at Wolf Entertainment are deeply saddened by Julian’s passing, and our sympathies go to his entire family.”
Apart from his TV roles, Julian McMahon gained significant recognition for his work in films. He portrayed Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movies of 2005 and 2007. Other notable film appearances include Premonition, RED, Paranoia, You’re Not You, Swinging Safari, and more recently, The Surfer (2024), which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival.
I’m deeply saddened to share this news. Working alongside Julian for six weeks on the set of “The Surfer” was an unforgettable experience. Amongst all the scenes I’ve been part of, our collaborations rank among my favorites. Julian was not only a remarkably gifted actor but also one of my favorite people. He possessed a kindness and intelligence that made working with him a true pleasure. My heart goes out to his family during this difficult time.
In his latest acting gig, Julian took on a character in the Netflix murder-mystery show titled “The Residence“, portraying the Australian Prime Minister, thus reconnecting with his ancestral heritage.
His widow, Kelly, and their daughter, Madison “Maddy” McMahon, are left behind, as the entertainment industry and his admirers lament the demise of an exceptionally gifted actor whose artistry and compassion deeply impacted countless people.
