With such an entertaining ensemble, it’s no wonder that everyone was captivated by these movies. They brought back a sense of nostalgia that we all cherished. As for the latest news, Shawn Levy is shedding light on the casting of Henry Cavill as Wolverine in the variant “Cavillrine.”

In the creative process of the upcoming film, a group headed by Levy and multi-talented actor Ryan Reynolds (who also penned the script), were reportedly discussing fresh concepts with Henry Cavill, potentially in the role of Wolverine. It so happened that during this period, Cavill was parting ways from the DC Universe, symbolized by his portrayal of Superman, and thus, he was also separating from Warner Bros.

It’s clear that the suggestion of adding Cavill to the project was enthusiastically accepted by both potential actors and Cavill himself. His commitment was nothing short of astonishing, as he underwent a complete physical transformation for the role and spent countless hours smoking cigars, despite how sick it made him feel.

During my chat with actor Josh Horowitz, Levy shared an interesting detail: Throughout the script-writing phase, the character was actually consistently called ‘Cavill’ behind the scenes by the film’s team. In the creative process, McDonnell and Reynolds, the lead actor of the movie, often exchanged a laptop, ensuring Cavill would be included in the project as Reynolds believed he was eager to do good for D.C.

Levy expressed: “Ryan and I were both there, penning thoughts. In fact, we were exchanging the laptop back and forth. It seemed to me that perhaps the past events related to DC in the early stages of writing had an impact on us, and we found ourselves saying, ‘We need to make this happen. We want Cavill as Cavillrine.'”

In addition, the director emphasized that events at DC and Cavill’s departure from the Superman role significantly boosted their chances. Rapidly, they decided to cast Cavill for the alternate role of Wolverine, and his eager agreement came swiftly, even before the specific offer he was keen on was fully detailed.

On the designated filming day, Cavill was thoroughly prepared and poised to deliver a stellar performance. He went so far as to puff on an “offensive cigar” for extended periods, which ultimately left him feeling queasy. Levy marveled at Cavill’s commitment—even amid personal distress. According to Levy’s interview with The New York Times, “Henry not only sported that well-toned physique but kept the cigar burning in his mouth throughout the entire shoot day.” The following day, it was said that Henry had fallen ill due to inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight, yet he never faltered from his dedication.

In light of significant changes happening at DC Studios following James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over leadership roles last October, the decision was made to recast Superman, which ultimately led to Henry Cavill’s departure from the studio. With his chapter concluded, Cavill seized an intriguing chance to become part of the Marvel universe. As Levy put it, “A new text, a swift affirmative response – boom! He was in.”
