Combining family relationships with business dealings can be risky, particularly in the intense world of Hollywood. Many young stars had parents who initially guided their careers and managed their money. But as these performers grew up, some realized their parents had either made poor financial decisions or interfered too much in their professional lives. This led to several celebrities taking the difficult step of firing their parents, seeking to regain control of their careers and finances, sometimes through lawsuits or legal emancipation.
Macaulay Culkin

Macaulay Culkin rose to fame as a child star in the 1990s, but his personal life was marked by a difficult and public fight with his parents. In 1995, his parents began a heated legal battle over his care and a $50 million fortune. To protect his money from what he claimed was poor handling, Culkin took the unusual step of legally separating from his parents and taking control of his finances. This allowed him to manage his own trust fund and, essentially, retire from acting at just 14 years old. He has since discussed the physical and emotional abuse he experienced while his father managed his career.
Beyoncé

In 2011, Beyoncé surprised many by ending her professional relationship with her father, Mathew Knowles, who had guided her career from the beginning with Destiny’s Child and throughout her successful solo career. This decision came after an audit allegedly revealed financial irregularities related to her recent tour. Although Beyoncé initially described the split as a business move, she later shared that it was a difficult emotional process. Since then, she’s been fully in charge of her career and creative vision through her company, Parkwood Entertainment.
Selena Gomez

In 2014, Selena Gomez made the difficult decision to end her professional relationship with her parents, Mandy and Brian Teefey, who had managed her career since her early days on Disney Channel’s ‘Wizards of Waverly Place.’ She felt she needed a more experienced manager with a wider range of high-profile clients. This caused a significant family strain, and reports suggest they didn’t speak for about a year. However, despite this professional disagreement, Selena and her mother have continued to work together on projects, including the Netflix series ’13 Reasons Why’.
Usher

Usher and his mother, Jonnetta Patton, who also served as his manager from the beginning of his career, have had a complex working relationship. In 2007, Usher publicly ended their professional partnership, explaining he wanted a simpler mother-son dynamic. This decision happened right before his marriage to Tameka Foster, sparking speculation that their relationship played a role. Although Usher brought her back on board in 2008 when his career slowed down, they continued to go through periods of working together and then separating professionally over the next ten years. Their story is a well-known example of how difficult it can be to combine family ties with a career in the music industry.
Gary Coleman

Gary Coleman is best remembered for his role on ‘Diff’rent Strokes,’ but his life took a difficult turn when he fought with his parents over his money. In 1989, Coleman sued his adoptive parents, Willie and Sue Coleman, and his business advisor, claiming they had mismanaged the money he earned as a child star. He discovered that despite making millions, his accounts contained far less than expected because of high fees and expenses. Although he won a $1.28 million settlement in 1993, he never fully recovered the money he lost, and the lawsuit permanently damaged his relationship with his parents, remaining estranged until his death in 2010.
LeAnn Rimes

In 2000, singer LeAnn Rimes sued her father, Wilbur Rimes, and a former manager, claiming they took over $7 million of her income while she was a minor. The lawsuit stated her father had arranged management fees to unfairly benefit himself, leaving her with much less money than she earned. The dispute became very public, including a tense courtroom exchange where Rimes reportedly voiced her anger towards her father. They reached a settlement in 2002 and have since been working to repair their relationship.
Mischa Barton

In 2015, actress Mischa Barton filed a lawsuit against her mother, Nuala Barton, accusing her of being overly controlling and financially exploitative. The suit claimed Nuala misrepresented Mischa’s earnings from acting jobs, kept the extra money while managing her career, and even forced her to buy a very expensive house, then prevented her from living in it. Mischa described feeling used for financial gain, alleging her mother saw her as a source of income to support a lavish lifestyle. Although the case was ultimately dropped, it revealed a significant and painful breakdown in their financial and emotional relationship.
Ariel Winter

In 2015, after a lengthy court case, Ariel Winter legally separated from her mother, Crystal Workman. The ‘Modern Family’ star claimed her mother was emotionally and physically abusive and had repeatedly hindered her work. The court agreed that Workman’s actions were harmful to Winter’s career and personal life, and granted guardianship to Winter’s sister. At 17, Winter gained complete control of her career and finances, becoming an emancipated minor. Since then, she’s spoken out to support other young actors who experience similar exploitation in Hollywood.
Aaron Carter

In 2003, at age 16, pop singer Aaron Carter fired his mother, Jane Carter, as his manager. This happened after he found out $100,000 had been taken from his bank account without his permission. He publicly claimed his mother mismanaged the money he earned as a young star. Though he thought about legally becoming independent from her, he first tried to resolve things privately. Despite this, he continued to struggle with money throughout his life and often blamed his early financial difficulties on his mother’s management.
Leighton Meester

In 2011, actress Leighton Meester, known for her role in ‘Gossip Girl,’ had a public legal dispute with her mother, Constance Meester. Leighton sued her mother, alleging she misused $7,500 a month that was meant to cover medical expenses for Leighton’s younger brother. According to the lawsuit, the money was instead used for cosmetic procedures like plastic surgery and Botox, as well as hair extensions, despite Constance still acting as Leighton’s manager. Constance countersued, claiming she was owed $3 million based on a verbal agreement for managing Leighton’s career. However, the judge sided with Leighton, finding no proof of a legitimate management contract. This ruling ended their professional and financial ties.
Brooke Shields

In 1995, Brooke Shields made the challenging decision to end her professional relationship with her mother, Teri Shields, who had managed her career since she was a baby. Teri was known for choosing controversial roles for Brooke, like in the film ‘Pretty Baby’. As Brooke entered her late 20s, she wanted to become independent and break free from her mother’s controlling behavior and struggles with alcohol. Brooke described the split as incredibly painful, temporarily straining their relationship. However, it ultimately allowed her to control her career and move beyond the “sexy child” image her mother had created.
Tiffany

In 1988, teen singer Tiffany, famous for her hit song “I Think We’re Alone Now,” legally sought independence from her mother, Janie Williams, due to a conflict over who should manage her career. Tiffany supported her manager, while her mother claimed the manager was exploiting her. The dispute led to a court case where a judge ultimately appointed Tiffany’s aunt as her legal guardian, reducing her mother’s control. This case became well-known as an example of the difficulties young stars face when trying to handle their own success and finances.
Jena Malone

In 1999, actress Jena Malone, known for films like ‘Stepmom’ and ‘Contact,’ legally sought independence from her mother, Deborah Malone. Malone alleged her mother had mismanaged over $280,000 from her trust fund through unsuccessful business ventures and gifts to family members. Despite her acting success, Malone claimed this mismanagement left her with little money and owing significant back taxes. In 2000, the court granted her emancipation, giving her complete control over her career and finances. The court also prevented her mother from interfering with her future work, allowing Malone to pursue her career independently.
