As a film fan, I was really excited to see Paul Mescal and Gracie Abrams make their red carpet debut as a couple! They were at the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards in London, and it was such a sweet moment – apparently, they’ve been together for over a year, so it was lovely to finally see them out together publicly.

The evening marked a significant moment for Paul Mescal’s career. He received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the British Academy Film Awards for his performance as William Shakespeare in the film Hamnet. His fellow actor, Jessie Buckley, is also nominated, this time for Best Actress.

There’s a lot of excitement in Ireland surrounding Buckley’s BAFTA nomination. A win would make her the first Irish actor to receive the Best Actress award at the BAFTAs. She’s already enjoyed a successful awards season, having won at both the Golden Globes and the IFTAs.

As a film critic, I’ve been noticing a fantastic trend: Irish actors are absolutely dominating the BAFTAs lately. Just a couple of years ago, we saw incredible wins for Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon with The Banshees of Inisherin. Then Cillian Murphy took home Best Actor for Oppenheimer this year. Now, if newcomer Gemma Buckley wins, it would be a historic moment – Ireland would have swept all four major acting categories at the BAFTAs, which is a remarkable achievement!
