Margot Robbie was back in Sydney this weekend as the head judge for Tropfest 2026. The short film festival, held at Centennial Park on February 22nd, hadn’t taken place in seven years, making this a special return.
Robbie led the jury at the event and spoke to reporters about how Tropfest has historically been a crucial starting point for filmmakers. She called it a place where innovative ideas and career chances come together. Beyond simply attending, Robbie actively participated by choosing the winners from the 16 short films submitted. Each film had to be under seven minutes long and feature an hourglass – this year’s required element.

Margot Robbie was joined on the judging panel by James Cameron (appearing remotely), Sarah Snook, and Dylan River. John Polson, the festival’s founder, expressed his excitement about having Robbie participate, calling it an honor to welcome her back home to lead the Tropfest Jury.

The event attracted a big crowd and received support from YouTube and CommBank. Filmmakers just starting out were awarded a total of $100,000 in prize money to help them create new work.
Robbie’s appearance on the show follows a busy year. She recently played Catherine Earnshaw in a new movie version of Wuthering Heights, directed by Emerald Fennell, alongside Jacob Elordi. She called the part a fascinating challenge. The film quickly earned back its $80 million production cost, even though critics had mixed opinions.
Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, continues to champion films with powerful female characters and fresh storytelling. She’s also set to appear in upcoming movies, including a live-action version of The Sims and a prequel to Ocean’s Eleven.
I was so excited to see her back at Tropfest! It really shows how much she cares about supporting Aussie filmmakers and independent cinema, even though she’s doing amazing things in Hollywood. It’s great to see her giving back to the scene that helped launch her career.
