Star Trek is evolving its story with a new series that’s generating buzz among fans. “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” has been gaining traction this season, especially with recent episodes that featured a significant character’s death, the reappearance of a familiar villain, and intriguing questions about secret weapons, a possible spy, and the mother of a student played by Tatiana Maslany.
The latest episode focuses on Jay-Den Kraag, a Klingon cadet portrayed by Karim Diane, and firmly establishes him as a queer character. Although the show doesn’t explicitly state his sexual orientation, it depicts a clear romantic connection between him and fellow student Kyle Djokovic.
Fans have been wondering about a romantic connection, and it seems to be confirmed by what happens on screen – including a kiss and displays of affection. Off-screen, it’s been confirmed too. George Hawkins, Jay-Den’s co-star, told ScreenRant that there’s definitely romantic chemistry between them in the role.
This episode also follows Darem, a cadet being pressured into an arranged marriage. Jay-Den gets caught up in the wedding preparations and, as the story progresses, a deep emotional bond between them becomes apparent. Hawkins discussed this connection further in a recent ScreenRant interview.
The connection between Jay-Den and Darem is fascinating. Jay-Den acts as a reflection for Darem, honestly confronting him and challenging his behavior. He’s the first person at the Academy to truly point out Darem’s flaws – that he tends to hide behind a facade and can be a bit of a coward. It’s compelling to watch Jay-Den see through this, and it’s a particularly powerful moment in this episode.
I really feel like there’s something special between Jay-Den and his co-star. It’s definitely romantic, with a clear attraction, but it goes way beyond that. I think they help each other be more honest and true to themselves, and that’s what makes their connection so compelling – it’s something we all crave, isn’t it?
This situation adds conflict to the storyline. While Jay-Den seems dedicated to Kyle, the show subtly suggests he also has romantic feelings for Darem. However, Darem’s sexual orientation remains unknown, and the series hasn’t addressed how Klingon society at this time views relationships of this nature.
This question is important because previous Star Trek shows have portrayed Klingons as deeply committed to their partners. For example, in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Worf considered infidelity a serious disgrace and reacted very strongly to it. Klingon relationships were typically depicted as lasting a lifetime and being taken very seriously.
The new series might show Jay-Den developing romantic feelings for multiple people, which could be a significant change for Klingon characters. While some fans might appreciate this as a natural evolution and a fresh take on the story, others may worry it goes against established Klingon customs.
