As a dedicated follower of the royal family’s journey, I find myself reflecting deeply on the passing of Lord Robert Fellowes, a man who played a significant role in shaping the lives of our beloved monarch and her family. His service to Queen Elizabeth II spanned over two decades, during which he was not just a trusted advisor but also a silent guardian watching over the royal household.
On July 31st, an announcement was made by The London Times that Lord Robert Fellowes, elder brother-in-law to Princess Diana, had passed away at the age of 82. Although the specific cause of his death remains undisclosed, it’s confirmed that he died on Monday. His nephews, Princes William and Harry, mourn their uncle.
In April 1978, Prince Charles’ uncle (Earl Spencer) wed Lady Jane Fellowes. At Princess Diana’s wedding to Prince Charles’ brother (Spencer-Jane), Diana served as a bridesmaid. The couple had three children together, but none of them have spoken publicly about their father’s passing yet.
The two princes, Prince William and Prince Harry, have not yet made any public comments about the passing of their uncle.
A confidant of Prince Harry (Duke of Sussex) told Daily Beast that the passing of Fellowes was an enormous surprise to the Spencer family. The friend expressed, “The loss will greatly impact the Spencer family. Under regular circumstances, it would have been inconceivable for Harry not to be present to console Jane.”
They also mentioned, “However, these aren’t ordinary circumstances, and there’s a strong possibility that everyone finds Harry’s presence at the funeral might stir up unnecessary drama. It could be a great disappointment for him if he’s unable to attend.”
During Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, Robert Fellowes served as a trusted confidant to the British Royal Family. Holding the position of the Queen’s private secretary from 1990 to 1999, he was an integral part of her inner circle. Notably, he stood by Queen Elizabeth’s side during Prince Harry and William’s uncle’s separation from Princess Diana in 1996.
Lord Robert Fellowes held a deep affection for the late Princess Diana and expressed profound feelings about her tragic death resulting from a car accident in 1997. At that time, Fellowes lamented that the mother of two princes was an exceptional individual and regretted how the circumstances unfolded for her.
At the given moment, Fellowes expressed, “She held a special place in my heart. It pains me to say she struggled with finding joy, and it’s truly unfortunate for those who experience such circumstances.”
Prior to serving as an advisor to Queen Elizabeth, Lord Robert Fellowes had a career in banking. The late British courtier leaves behind his three children and grandchildren.
