American Airlines, they say, carries dreams. More often, these days, it seems to carry debt and the scent of rising kerosene. The stock closed Thursday at $13.35, a decline of 5.32%, and not a surprising one. The market, like a restless field, shifts with the wind, and right now, that wind smells of expensive fuel. Sixty-three and a half million shares changed hands, a frantic shuffling, nearly fifteen percent above the usual quiet murmur. A good deal of worry in that volume, I suspect. The company’s been airborne since 2005, but the altitude hasn’t brought much gain; a thirty-one percent fall from its initial flight.
The larger currents weren’t kind either. The S&P 500 dipped a fraction, settling at 6,862, and the Nasdaq Composite followed, closing at 22,683. It’s a contagion, this unease. Delta and United, fellow travelers in this sky, also felt the drag, shedding value as if weighted down by the very air they navigate. Delta closed at $67.44, down 5.16%, and United landed at $110.05, a loss of 5.88%.
They speak of earnings projections, of $1.70 to $2.70 per share by 2026. Fine figures, on paper. But a man can’t eat a projection. The company had a good quarter, a record, even, in revenue. But expectations, like thirsty crows, are never truly satisfied. And when fuel costs climb, as they are doing now, the margin for error shrinks to nothing. It’s a simple equation, really. Jet fuel is the lifeblood of these machines, and when that blood gets expensive, the whole body weakens.
The 10-K filing and an upcoming safety vote add a layer of dust to the proceedings. Regulatory hurdles and operational risks are always present, of course, but they become more visible in times like these, when the market is already jittery. Investors are watching, waiting to see if American Airlines can somehow conjure a profit from thin air, to protect its margins and still deliver on those distant promises. A tall order, considering the headwinds. Most will likely chase the next bright thing, the next illusion of easy gain. But a careful man, a man who understands the weight of things, will remember that sometimes, the safest place to be is on the ground, watching the others circle.
