As a crime enthusiast who has seen their fair share of chilling series, The Widower stands out as one of the most gripping and bone-chilling tales I’ve ever encountered. Having delved into the lives of notorious criminals like Malcolm Webster, it’s always fascinating to see how such seemingly ordinary individuals can lead double lives filled with deceit and destruction.
One chilling British miniseries that aired on ITV is titled “The Widower.” This series tells the story and criminal exploits of Malcolm Webster, a man with a dark past. The three 1-hour episodes from 2014 take us through the 13 years during which he poisoned his wife, eventually taking her life, as well as causing harm to two other women’s lives.
In my perspective as a devoted follower, the intricate portrayals of Felicity Drumm, Simone Banerjee, and Detective Charlie Henry suggest that this captivating series is rooted in authentic real-life events. Malcolm Webster, a master manipulator with an uncanny calmness, skillfully exploited his wives in the most heartless ways imaginable, draining them of their resources.
Is The Widower’s story true?
Indeed, it tells the account of a man named Malcolm Webster, who was initially a quiet nurse. The story unfolds how he orchestrated the staging of his first wife’s demise in 1994 for a life insurance payout of 200,000 euros. With these funds, he embarked on a new life with his second spouse, Felicity Drumm, in New Zealand. Regrettably, he also attempted to end her life but was unsuccessful. The tragic events began following the death of his first wife, Claire Morris.
As a devoted follower recounting my account, let me share that I once followed the story of Webster, a nurse notorious for his heinous acts spanning over a decade. He even attempted to swindle money from Felicity Drumm, but her parents’ timely intervention thwarted his plan. Undeterred, he then set his sights on Simone Banerjee, marking her as his next target.
In a deceitful act, Malcolm Webster pretended to have cancer, seeking sympathy and affection from Simone. Unbeknownst to her, he also had sinister plans – he intended to murder Simone for her wealth. His manipulative tactics continued to torment Simone until Detective Inspector Charlie Henry took on the case and eventually apprehended him.
Intriguing cast of The Widower
In the show, Reece Shearsmith takes on the role of Malcolm Webster’s character, impressing Simone so much that she felt his performance was nearly perfect (99% accurate). The series also included real-life interviews with Simone and scenes from Felicity, which added layers to the storyline and the overall feel of the series. To make it even more convincing, they incorporated actual footage, such as Webster’s first wedding, to enhance authenticity.
In this story, the character of Malcolm Webster’s second wife, Felicity, was brilliantly brought to life by Kate Fleetwood on screen. James Laurenson, on the other hand, masterfully portrayed the role of Brian Drumm, Felicity’s father, who played a significant part in their relationship and eventually unveiled some truths. You can also spot Federay Holmes as Jane Drumm, Felicity’s sister, in the production.
1. Archie Panjabi’s portrayal of Simone Banerjee, Webster’s third victim, is worth mentioning. John Hannah took on the role of Charlie Henry, a character who brought justice to Webster’s victims. Fans of suspenseful dramas and real-life crime stories have their own dedicated audience. If you’re interested in watching The Widower and Malcolm Webster’s Cruel Crimes, this 3-episode mini-series is ideal for you. You can stream it on Apple TV+.
So, I’d like to hear your opinions regarding Malcolm Webster and his criminal activities. Interestingly, the series “The Widower” is actually inspired by real-life events.
