As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for both history and artistry, I am thrilled to see the addition of “House of Ga’a” to Netflix’s collection. This Yoruba film, set against the backdrop of the 18th-century Oyo Kingdom, offers an immersive exploration into the complex world of power, ambition, and supernatural influences.
Netflix introduced “House of Ga’a” to its library on July 26, 2024. This Yoruba production is based in the Oyo Kingdom of the 18th century and follows the tale of Bashorun Ga’a, a formidable ruler renowned for his mercilessness and insatiable thirst for power.
During Ga’a’s time as ruler, he resorted to using juju to eliminate four emperors in order to install members of his own family as Ajeles, the provincial governors. He saw himself as the supreme power in the kingdom and refused to acknowledge any higher authority, including the emperor. Out of fear, the nobles granted Ga’a the right to select the new ruler themselves.
In this film, we see events unfold from the perspective of Oyemekun, Ga’a’s son. Bolanle Austen-Peters is responsible for its direction, and the cast includes:
1. Femi Branch as Ga’a
Femi Branch, a 54-year-old actor and director hailing from Sagamu, Nigeria, has made a name for himself with an impressive resume in film and television. Some of his most recognized performances include those in “Adire” (released in 2023), “Love is War” (premiered in 2019), and “A Place in the Stars” (produced in 2014).
In “House of Ga’a,” the character portrayed by Branch is Ga’a, or Bashorun Ga, a significant historical figure who held the military leadership position in the Oyo empire during the 18th century. The film depicts Ga’a as an individual driven by personal desires, a thirst for power, and susceptible to corruption.
In the narrative, Ga’a is portrayed as more than just a driven military leader; he is also revealed to be a self-centered spouse and parent, unwilling to concede defeat. The account concludes with Ga’a’s downfall and end.
2. Mike Afolarin as Oyemekun
Mike Afolarin, a 30-year-old actor from Lagos, has built an impressive resume with notable roles in various TV shows and films. Some of his credited works are the 2022 production “Far From Home,” “The Wait” released in 2021, and “Kasala!” which came out in 2018.
In the movie, Mike Afolarin portrays Oyemekun, who is Ga’a’s son. Though not known for his exceptional warrior skills, Oyemekun wields his sword with great resolve. Throughout the film, Oyemekun forms a deep romantic connection with Princess Agbonyin. However, their union is forbidden by Ga’a.
When Agbonyin passes away, the situation becomes critically worse. In reaction, Oyemekun journeys back to Oyo and takes decisive action by eliminating Sasa and attempting to communicate directly with Ga’a. Regrettably, his scheme to eliminate Ga’a is unsuccessful. As the lone survivor of Ga’a’s attack on Oyo, Oyemekun.
3. Tosin Adeyemi as Zeinab
In the digital edition 61 of La Veronica Magazine, Nigerian actress Tosin Adeyemi graces the cover. She takes on the role of Zeinab in the show “House of Ga’a.”
In the movie, Zeinab is first introduced as a slave brought to Oyo following the demise of the Nupe King. At first, Ga’a sees her as a servant, but later on, she wins his approval. Despite enduring hostility from Ga’a’s other wives due to her growing relationship with him, Ga’a protects her and eventually takes her as his new spouse.
In the course of the story, Zeinab remains deeply devoted to Ga’a, serving as his dedicated wife despite his disability. Her growth as a character highlights the significance of loyalty and perseverance in the context of Ga’a’s family hardships.
4. Ibrahim Chatta as Sasa L’eniyan
As an obsessed fan, I can’t help but express my excitement as I witness the brilliant acting of Ibrahim Chatta. He has graced our screens with unforgettable performances in Jagun Jagun (2023), Adire (2023), and King of Thieves (2022). Now, he brings Sasa to life in House of Ga’a. Each scene he touches is infused with his unique talent, leaving me in awe and eagerly anticipating his next move.
In the film, Sasa is depicted as a well-known practitioner of dark magic, assisting Ga’a in eliminating his foes. At the same time, Sasa serves as an important advisor for Ga’a, cautioning him about the possible repercussions of his decisions before he becomes incapacitated.
Chatta’s depiction of Sasa enriches the narrative, highlighting the intricate interplay of power and the supernatural in Ga’a’s storyline. His rendition showcases his skill at creating complex characters with intense emotion and nuance, thereby enhancing the film’s suspenseful atmosphere.
