Mattson Tomlin, who created the animated series Terminator Zero, has announced that Netflix has cancelled the show after one season. While critics and fans loved it, Tomlin explained on social media that not enough people watched the series to make a second season financially viable for the streaming service, despite the overwhelmingly positive response. The high production costs and time commitment ultimately led to the decision.
The show, which premiered in August 2024, aimed to build on the well-known franchise by combining its classic science fiction elements with impressive anime visuals. According to Tomlin, Netflix gave him a lot of creative control to tell a story that was meaningful to him. However, he also recognized the realities of the entertainment business, explaining that the show needed a strong audience to justify its high production costs—and ultimately, it didn’t get enough viewers.
The show was unfortunately cancelled, despite receiving amazing reviews and a lot of positive feedback. While many people loved it, viewership just wasn’t high enough to continue. I had big plans for future seasons, particularly exploring the ‘Future War’ storyline, but I’m content with the show as a complete story now.

As a huge fan of the show, it’s interesting to hear how the creator, Tomlin, originally planned things. He had a much bigger story in mind – a five-season arc with a major ‘Future War’ storyline taking up seasons two and three! But honestly, he seems really content with how things wrapped up after just one season. He actually told fans he’s very happy with the show feeling complete as it is. Apparently, Netflix even offered him a few extra episodes to finish things off after they cancelled it, but he turned them down! He wanted the first season’s finale to be the definitive ending, and I totally respect that artistic vision. It’s good to know he didn’t feel pressured to stretch the story beyond its natural conclusion.
Despite positive reviews – the show earned an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and a talented voice cast including Timothy Olyphant, André Holland, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rosario Dawson, it has been cancelled. The lack of news after the premiere worried fans, but writer Mattson Tomlin recently confirmed the show won’t be returning.
While Terminator Zero is ending, Tomlin is now focusing on The Batman Part II, which begins filming in the UK this April. He and director Matt Reeves have been working hard to create a fresh and exciting story for Robert Pattinson’s Batman.
Timothy Olyphant is staying very busy, jumping from major projects to new ones. He’ll be starring in the new FX series Alien: Earth as a character named Kirsh, and he’s also in the action-comedy Over Your Dead Body with Jason Segel and Samara Weaving, which will premiere at SXSW in March.
Sonoya Mizuno is returning as Mysaria for the third season of House of the Dragon, and Rosario Dawson is joining the cast of Baton, a soccer drama executive produced by David Beckham. Despite the conclusion of this animated story, the Terminator franchise is still expanding.
James Cameron has mentioned he’s working on a new live-action Terminator script, but it will feature a different cast than the original films. While Tomlin would be happy to revisit the world of Terminator someday, he’s currently focused on his role in Gotham and continuing to take on major blockbuster films that are boosting his career.
