Having grown up in Southern California, I could deeply relate to the raw emotion and high-stakes lyricism that defined this historic face-off. The mention of NBA star DeMar DeRozan in the feud brought back memories of his time with the Toronto Raptors and how he became a symbol of unity during Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” performance at the Juneteenth Pop Out concert.
The legendary verbal clash between Drake and Kendrick Lamar showcased intricate rapping skills, insults traded among their supporters, and intense discussions. Additionally, notable figures were brought up in the lyrics, such as Serena Williams being referenced by Lamar in “Not Like Us,” or Chris Brown mentioned by Drake in “Family Matters.”
DeMar DeRozan, a well-known NBA player, initially began his pro basketball journey with the Toronto Raptors. Later on, he joined the San Antonio Spurs and the Chicago Bulls. Currently, DeRozan is a valued member of the Sacramento Kings’ team.
In the song “Not Like Us,” Lamar expressed his feelings about DeRozan being traded from the Raptors and used this opportunity to subtly criticize Drake. He rhymed, “I’m relieved DeRozan returned, honestly, you both didn’t merit him.”
Afterward, DeRozan featured in Lamar’s music video for that specific song and joined him onstage during his “Pop Out” Juneteenth concert, where they performed the track multiple times.

Given this background, one might wonder if DeRozan’s allegiance to Lamar has affected their friendship with Drake.
In a recent interview with The Sacramento Bee, DeRozan discussed his role in the ongoing basketball rivalry and brought up Drake as well. Prior to that, he reflected on the significance of “Not Like Us” and the Pop Out show for the people of Los Angeles.
DeRozan said ‘Not Like Us’ is bigger than Drake
As a gamer, I’d say: “Being involved in ‘Not Like Us’ was an enjoyable experience for me. It went beyond the perceived feud between Lamar and Drake and united our city in a unique way. For once, there were no conflicts or violence, only peace and unity among fans. The beauty of those moments lay in the coming together of people in harmony.”
At the concert, Lamar introduced several up-and-coming rappers who are new to the scene, many of whom hail from competing Los Angeles gangs. Towards the end of the show, everyone gathered for a photo, symbolizing harmony among them and setting aside their past animosities, if only for a moment.
It brought our whole city together.
DeRozan, a native of Southern California and raised amidst gang culture, viewed “Not Like Us” as more than just a win for Lamar and Los Angeles. He expressed this sentiment, emphasizing his personal connection to the city and the rapper. Additionally, he highlighted their long-standing bond, mentioning that they have always supported each other throughout their respective journeys.
“During the performance of the song, DeRozan asked me to join in. He referred to our bond as a family connection. Whatever project Lamar is working on, I’ll gladly be involved with no hesitation. Our relationship has always been that way.”
DeRozan updates his friendship with Drake
According to DeRozan’s perspective, the battle between him and Drake hasn’t affected their friendship in any way. Moreover, he pointed out that the public made a mountain out of a molehill by turning the friendly rap competition into a major event.
“Despite the public feud between Drake and DeRozan, his loyalty remains unwavering. He added, ‘People can misconstrue things and focus on the negatives, but at heart, it’s just music and entertainment. Two major hip-hop artists engaged in healthy competition, resulting in an intense rivalry.'”
At the Pop Out show, both the Sacramento Kings player and Russell Westbrook from the Los Angeles area were present and took part in the event. Additionally, LeBron James was frequently mentioned due to his attendance and lively dance performance with his wife Savannah James to the song “Not Like Us” in May.
James and Drake had been friends even prior to the battle. It’s possible their friendship still stands. However, some people on social media strongly believe that James sided with Lamar during the confrontation. Additionally, before representing the US team in recent events, James was overheard expressing his fondness for the song “Not Like Us.”

Regarding DeRozan, Drake hasn’t shared any updates about their friendship. It’s plausible that they’ve had private conversations at certain points, perhaps before or after DeRozan appeared in Drake’s music video “Not Like Us.”
