A Speculative Venture: Strategy and the Digital Coin

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a company in possession of a bold strategy, must be in want of a favourable market. Strategy (MSTR +8.85%), however, has lately experienced a diminution of its standing, its shares having suffered a decline of nearly sixty percent over the past twelve months. This misfortune, it is generally understood, arises from its singular devotion to Bitcoin (BTC 0.57%), a digital commodity whose own value has proven, of late, somewhat volatile. Yet, a modest investment of ten thousand dollars, placed with Strategy today, might, should fortune smile, yield a return of a most extraordinary nature.

Mr. Michael Saylor, the gentleman who guided Strategy’s transformation from a concern of moderate growth to the foremost corporate accumulator of Bitcoin, ventures a prediction of a most ambitious scale. He anticipates a rise in the cryptocurrency’s price from its present level of approximately sixty-eight thousand dollars to a sum of twenty-one million dollars by the year 2046. Should this prove accurate, an investment of ten thousand dollars in Bitcoin itself would blossom to three million and nine thousand dollars. Strategy, with its continuing penchant for acquiring the digital coin, might, therefore, experience a similar augmentation of its worth.

The recent decline in Bitcoin’s price has, naturally, occasioned some disquiet amongst Strategy’s shareholders, particularly as the cryptocurrency briefly fell below the company’s average purchase price of seventy-six thousand and fifty-six dollars per token. Mr. Saylor, however, has been quick to reassure, observing that Strategy would not be compelled to liquidate its holdings unless Bitcoin were to fall below eight thousand dollars – a level at which its total holdings would approximate its net debt. A most delicate balance, indeed.

For those inclined to view Bitcoin with favour, an acquisition of Strategy’s shares might prove a convenient proxy for direct ownership. If Mr. Saylor’s “Bitcoin Maximalist” thesis should prevail, a few thousand dollars, prudently invested, might, over the course of several decades, yield a sum of a most considerable magnitude. One cannot help but observe, however, that such ventures are rarely without a degree of uncertainty, and a wise investor will always proceed with caution, lest speculation overcome prudence.
