Christopher Nolan’s success as a director wasn’t luck; he acknowledges a key moment early in his career that truly changed things. After making his first film, Following, with a small group of friends and using his own clothes for costumes, he experienced a major turning point. He’s said going from his mother providing food for the cast to overseeing a $4 million budget and large team for Memento was the biggest step in his career.

That breakthrough role ultimately led him to direct the Batman trilogy, where he successfully revitalized the character after some earlier, less serious portrayals. Films like The Dark Knight weren’t just popular; they changed expectations for superhero movies in the 21st century.

He’s continued to achieve great success with films like the complex Inception and his recent Academy Award-winning film, Oppenheimer. Nolan often talks about the directors who influenced him, and he recently shared his favorites with Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy.

Matt Damon will play Odysseus, and he dedicated himself to the role, even growing a beard for over a year at the director’s insistence. Tom Holland is cast as Telemachus, Odysseus’s son, and Anne Hathaway will play his wife, Penelope. Zendaya joins the film as the goddess Athena. The movie was filmed on location in Greece, Sicily, and Iceland to create a realistic and expansive feel, minimizing the need for special effects. Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron also have significant roles, making this one of director Nolan’s most impressive casts yet. A trailer released during Super Bowl 60 last month has significantly increased excitement for this retelling of the classic story.
