As a longtime gamer and comic book fan, I’ve followed the X-Men universe closely for years. Aaron Stanford’s return as Pyro in “Deadpool & Wolverine” is an exciting development for me, especially since his previous appearances in the X-Men movies differed significantly from his comic book counterpart.
Aaron Stanford is set to reprise his role as Pyro in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” bringing the X-Men character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Pyro, portrayed by Stanford, debuted in “X2: X-Men United” and appeared in “X-Men: The Last Stand.” In the films, Pyro’s power involves controlling fire, similar to his comic book counterpart. However, beyond that, there were significant differences between the two versions.
Pyro’s Costume Draws Inspiration from Marvel Comics’ Ultimate X-Men in Deadpool & Wolverine
In response to being queried about drawing inspiration from particular Marvel Comics tales for Pyro in “Deadpool and Wolverine” within the MCU, this was Stanford’s reply:
Pyro’s costume in Deadpool and Wolverine is inspired by the one from the Ultimate X-Men comic series, specifically the version of Pyro found in that Marvel Comics title. This edition of Pyro sports a distinctive look, which the creators have recreated for their costumes. However, they didn’t copy the rest of his appearance as this Pyro character is intriguing due to being a madman with extensive burns covering his entire body from a lifetime of dealing with fire.
The portrayal of Deadpool and Wolverine in the given context is a blend of their appearances from specific comic book stories and the adaptations made for Pyro in the X-Men films. However, these representations deviated significantly from the original Marvel Comics. Instead of being young characters, they were presented as grown adults. Moreover, an intriguing twist was added – they became Australian gothic romance novelists, which I found captivating but unfortunately, this aspect was not explored further.
In the Deadpool & Wolverine series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), we’re looking forward to witnessing some version of Pyro from Marvel Comics make an appearance. However, it’s essential to clarify that there exists another Marvel Comics continuity called Ultimate X-Men, which was initiated by Robert Kirkman in 2007. In this distinct universe, Pyro is a Morlock – a mutant residing in the sewers. His body bears extensive burn scars due to his prolonged contact with fire. It seems unlikely that the MCU will follow this storyline for Pyro’s character development but instead intends to pay homage to his distinctive appearance from it.
The X-Men Movies Never Really Used Marvel Comics for Inspiration When It Came to Pyro
During our conversation with Stanford, he not only mentioned Marvel Comics’ influences on his work in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” but also pointed out the notable absences of these inspirations in the initial X-Men film series. Surprisingly, he couldn’t locate Pyro from X2 and X3 in the comic books. Stanford expressed this thought: “[I was] searching high and low but couldn’t easily find the representation of Pyro as portrayed in X2 and X3 in the comics.”
At that point, I wasn’t drawing much inspiration from Marvel Comics for the X-Men character Pyro because the source materials provided were quite old-fashioned and different from what I was familiar with. The comics I knew didn’t have a lot of the background details that were being developed for this story set in the school environment with Rogue, Iceman, and Pyro. This younger version of Pyro wasn’t present in the original comics, so we had to create much of his backstory ourselves to align with the direction of the story.
After Pyro has grown up and gained more experience in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” it’s intriguing to ponder if any aspects of his character beyond his “Ultimate X-Men” costume will emerge in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Keep an eye out when this film hits theaters on July 26. Don’t forget to visit “TopMob” later this week for our exclusive interview with Aaron Stanford.
