Despite some audience discomfort, the actors in Brokeback Mountain were immensely proud of the film’s powerful story. Heath Ledger, especially, held the movie in such high regard that he chose not to attend the 2007 Oscars.

He’d been nominated for Best Actor the previous year, but refused to participate in the ceremony this time as a matter of principle. He discovered the Academy planned to open the show with a comedic segment that made his film the target of jokes.

Oscar hosts typically begin with a lighthearted monologue that playfully teases the year’s biggest films and stars, but Ledger didn’t want the film’s serious message diminished by what he saw as cheap humor on live television. He believed the story deserved more respect than to be used as a joke.

Jake Gyllenhaal recently shared a story about Heath Ledger in an interview with Another Man Magazine. He recalled that the producers wanted to open an awards show with a joke referencing their film, but Ledger strongly objected.

While Gyllenhaal initially thought the idea was harmless, Ledger quickly explained that it wasn’t something he was comfortable with, telling Gyllenhaal he didn’t want to make light of the project. By refusing to participate in such a high-profile event, Ledger demonstrated how seriously he took his work and the film’s message.

Gyllenhaal shared that making the movie continues to be meaningful to him years later, explaining that the characters’ experiences resonate with him on a deeply personal level, perhaps differently than with other viewers.

Both Gyllenhaal and Hawke were aware of the film’s significant impact on the LGBTQ+ community and were careful not to diminish that importance. As the film celebrates its 20th anniversary, its place as a groundbreaking work in queer cinema remains strong.
