Why Emma Stone Still Refuses to Watch One of Her Own Movies 16 Years Later

Even though Emma Stone is now a major Hollywood star, she still gets anxious thinking about one of her older films. In a recent interview with Variety, she confessed she’s never been able to watch the popular romantic comedy, Crazy, Stupid, Love.

The movie starred Emma Stone alongside Ryan Gosling, and also featured a large ensemble cast including Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, and Marisa Tomei. Despite the film’s success, Stone later admitted that making it was a difficult experience, as she was overly hard on herself.

In the interview, she shared that she deeply loved the script, but she put a lot of pressure on herself during filming. Being only 20 years old, she worried the project might not succeed. She felt a strong sense of responsibility, especially knowing the script was by Dan Fogelman and that she was working with such a talented cast.

The actress explained that this new project felt very different from her previous film, Easy A. She noted it required a precise balance and was the first time she’d had to completely depend on herself to manage all aspects of the role. The pressure was so intense that she hasn’t been able to bring herself to watch the finished movie, even when Timothée Chalamet asked if she had.

Greta Gerwig has noticed her perspective on watching her own films has evolved. She was so curious about this change that she even asked Timothée Chalamet if he could stand to watch his own work, revealing she’s becoming more comfortable viewing her own performances.

Her career has flourished since its beginnings. She recently won her second Oscar for her performance in Poor Things and continues to collaborate with director Yorgos Lanthimos. She was also recently seen in Kinds of Kindness alongside Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe, and earned critical acclaim for her work in the TV series The Curse.

I’m really excited about her latest film, Bugonia! And it’s cool to see she’s involved in so much through her production company, Fruit Tree. She’s still not doing romantic comedies, which is fine by me, but honestly, her career is just going from strength to strength.
