It is with a degree of circumspection, yet not without a measure of interest, that one observes the recent fluctuations in the fortunes of DoorDash. The company, engaged as it is in the distribution of victuals, has experienced a decline in its valuation – a circumstance which, whilst alarming to some, presents a discerning investor with an opportunity for judicious consideration. From a peak enjoyed in the early days of the year, the shares have retreated, a loss of nearly twenty-eight per cent in a mere six weeks. Such a reversal, naturally, prompts a degree of unease, and a hasty retreat might seem the most prudent course for the fainter of heart.
However, a closer examination reveals a company not in decline, but rather, actively engaged in a series of undertakings which, if successful, promise a substantial return. The last quarter witnessed revenues of $3.45 billion – a respectable increase of twenty-seven per cent – and a surge in orders to 776 million. Though the earnings per share fell somewhat short of expectations, one must remember that such figures are often a consequence of deliberate investment – in the curious devices known as delivery robots, in the infrastructure required to support this novel method of distribution, and, indeed, in the recent acquisition of Deliveroo. To mistake such expenditure for a sign of weakness would be a most grievous error.
Indeed, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the convenience of delivered meals is no longer a mere temporary indulgence, but a settled habit. The pandemic, it seems, did not merely encourage this practice, but fundamentally altered the expectations of a considerable portion of society. One might venture to suggest that the modern preoccupation with time – and the consequent desire to outsource even the most commonplace tasks – has created a fertile ground for such enterprises to flourish.
DoorDash, one observes, is not content to remain solely a purveyor of prepared meals. The acquisition of Deliveroo extends its reach into forty-five markets across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, a considerable expansion of its sphere of influence. Domestically, it is forging alliances with grocers such as Kroger, extending its services beyond the realm of restaurants. And, with a boldness that borders on the audacious, it is partnering with Waymo to pilot autonomous deliveries, a prospect which, if realized, could significantly reduce its operating costs.
The company is also experimenting with its own robotic delivery devices, named Dot. Should these ventures prove successful, a considerable influx of revenue might be anticipated. One cannot help but admire such enterprise, even whilst acknowledging the inherent risks involved.
There is, of course, a certain amount of speculation inherent in any investment. But it is not merely financial figures that commend DoorDash to the discerning investor. It is the subtle shift in societal habits, the undeniable convenience of on-demand delivery, that suggests a durable and sustainable business model. The global market for online food delivery is projected to reach $473 billion by 2026 – a sum which, one must admit, is not to be dismissed lightly.
The current dip in share price, therefore, presents a rare opportunity. To acquire a market leader at a discounted valuation – a prospect which, whilst not without its attendant risks, appears, upon careful consideration, to be a most prudent undertaking. A long-term investor, one suspects, would find much to commend in this particular enterprise.
