12th Silwerskermfees Feature Films Announced

As a movie critic with a background in African cinema and a deep appreciation for the unique stories that emerge from the continent, I’m thrilled to see the 12th Silwerskerm film festival lineup embracing both laughter and depth this year.

In this year’s 12th Silwerskerm film festival, comedy takes center stage with an impressive lineup of six films, featuring four laugh-out-loud comedies. For those seeking variety, there are two thought-provoking dramas and a heart-pounding thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The “deconstruction” of Reta Blom, as depicted in this film, is drawn from Zelda Bezuidenhout’s first chick-lit novel. It was brought to life on the silver screen by Henriëtta Gryffenberg. In this thought-provoking drama, we get a peek into the existence of Reta (Antoinette Louw), a long-time satisfied housewife and mother of two boys, as well as a devoted wife to Tobias.

In my perspective as a movie critic, Annelize Frost brings her unique directorial flair to life for the first time with the heartwarming romcom “Gebokste Liefde,” now streaming on Showmax. Tarryn Wyngaard of “Devil’s Peak” fame shines alongside Roché Killian and Jandré le Roux in this captivating tale. I, Suma-Lee, am a divorced single mom who has lost my job as a fashion designer. Feeling down on my luck, I decide to give boxing a try at a local gym. Through the power of perseverance and determination, I learn to find my inner strength and fight for what truly matters in life.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that in 2024, Stiaan Smith will make his comeback as both screenwriter and director of the captivating murder mystery, “Die Bloedhonde,” streaming exclusively on Showmax. In this gripping tale, my family vacation is unexpectedly cut short when a baffling death occurs at our resort.

As a passionate cinema lover, I’m excited to share that “Som van twee” is another hilarious comedy coming our way. This time around, the talented Simoné Pretorius from “Hotel” fame dons both the director’s hat and writes the screenplay. In this film, we have Louw Venter brilliantly portraying Henk, an intriguing psychologist whose confession at his funeral sets off a series of comically chaotic events. The stellar ensemble cast boasts big names like James Borthwick, Greteli de Swardt, Righard van Jaarsveld, Pierre Breytenbach, and Adriaan Havenga. So mark your calendars for this laugh-out-loud cinematic experience!

Jordy Sank gathers a group of seasoned women, including Lida Botha, June van Merch, Susanne Beyers, and Theresa Sedras, for the production of “Die Kwiksilwers“. In this heartwarming story, an elderly widow is persuaded by her three companions to embark on a humorous journey across the Karoo to witness the spectacular meteor shower in Sutherland.

In the drama “Hier.Na,” Quanita Adams plays the role of both screenwriter and director, as well as acting in the production. The story follows an accepting family who must deal with deep-rooted issues and hidden tensions that surface during a stormy day, all while preparing for a Muslim funeral before sundown. Quanita’s character, Juleigha, is described as a non-practicing Muslim, and she appears alongside David Isaacs, Shiefaa Hendricks, Lyle October, and June van Merch in the film.

During the Anglo-Boer War, Jaco Bouwer’s horror film “Breathing In” follows the story of a seriously injured Boer military commander. He is cared for by a traditional healer and her daughter, who soon discover that they are confronted with a threat even more perilous than the invading English soldiers.
