Callum Turner had to address the question of whether he might be the next James Bond almost as soon as he arrived at the Berlin Film Festival this week. He was there to promote his new film, Rosebush Pruning, but reporters quickly started asking about the ongoing speculation linking him to the iconic 007 role.
During a recent press conference, a journalist brought up a sensitive topic just minutes into the discussion. Recognizing it might be best to address it upfront, the journalist asked the question anyway. Turner, 35, responded with a smile, but politely declined to comment, stating it was too early to discuss the matter. He simply said, “You’re right, it’s very early for that question. I’m not going to comment on it.”
The mood became lighter when Tracy Letts, his co-star, cracked a joke, playfully announcing, “I’m sorry, I’m the next James Bond!” This comment made everyone laugh. Turner joined in the fun, responding with, “Tracy, I thought you weren’t going to say anything.”

The conversation about the next James Bond continued. Director Karim Aïnouz was then asked to describe his vision for a Bond film. Producer Barbara Broccoli playfully responded by saying Aïnouz would be directing her James Bond, a lighthearted comment that helped take the focus off actor-in-the-running, Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Recently, actor Glen Powell has been rumored to be in contention for the role of James Bond, especially now that Denis Villeneuve is set to direct a new Bond film for Amazon. Though nothing is official, people have been discussing the possibility with Powell whenever he’s been in the public eye.
The recent press conference highlighted the new film, Rosebush Pruning, which debuted at the Berlin Film Festival. The movie tells the story of a rich American family whose carefully constructed life begins to unravel as long-held secrets and a history of control are revealed. Starring alongside Turner is a talented ensemble cast including Jamie Bell, Lukas Gage, and Pamela Anderson. While Riley Keough and Elle Fanning are also in the film, they didn’t attend the press conference.
Politics is a frequent topic at the Berlin Film Festival, and it came up during the discussion with Tracy Letts. He explained that he generally prefers to keep the focus on the film, but acknowledged that his movie examines how extreme differences in wealth can contribute to damaging actions and the abuse of power. He stated plainly, “This wealth gap fosters negative behavior and can even lead to fascism.”
In a recent Variety interview, director Karim Aïnouz discussed the film’s serious themes, explaining that it explores family violence and how damaging patterns can be repeated across generations. He believes that using absurdity is sometimes the best way to address difficult subjects, noting that ‘the biggest amount of violence sometimes comes from within the family.’
Turner is choosing to concentrate on his job and isn’t paying attention to the gossip. His relaxed reaction indicates he’s aware that public interest in him is increasing, regardless of whether he lands the role of James Bond.
