DC Comics Announces DC All-In Initiative, Including New “Absolute DC” Universe

Twelve years ago, I was just a young comic book fan, eagerly devouring every new issue of my favorite DC Comics titles. The excitement was palpable when DC announced the New 52 relaunch – a bold publishing move that promised to breathe new life into the DC Universe. But that initial success soon turned sour as the reboot ended up being a missed opportunity for me and many other fans.

Twelve years ago, I witnessed an unprecedented publishing move by DC Comics with the New 52 relaunch. Although it brought initial triumphs, looking back, it was a missed chance. Now, DC Comics is preparing for a fresh publishing endeavor called DC All In. And let me tell you, they seem to have learned from their past mistakes. The original DC universe will persist, but a new one will coexist alongside it. This exciting announcement was made by none other than DC’s talented writers, Joshua Williamson (of Superman) and Scott Snyder (of Batman and Dark Nights Metal).

I’m thrilled about Snyder’s involvement in what’s being called “Absolute DC,” an alternate DC universe where iconic characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman receive fresh interpretations. This is reminiscent of Marvel’s Ultimate Comics from the early 2000s. I’ll be particularly excited for Snyder’s own take on “Absolute Batman,” promising an edgier Dark Knight unlike any we’ve encountered before. Unlike the New 52, this new universe will run parallel to the existing DC Universe, allowing both to coexist. The classic DC Universe will not undergo another reboot.

In contrast to Marvel’s Ultimate series, DC’s Absolute titles form a distinct universe yet remain interconnected to the larger narrative of the classic DCU through Darkseid. As stated by Snyder, the primary DC Universe is based on “Superman’s power,” a concept highlighted in the mini-series “Doomsday Clock.” In contrast, the Absolute Universe represents a “chaotic realm” powered by “Darkseid’s influence.” Characters from this new universe will need to exhibit greater resilience and ingenuity than their counterparts.

In October, the DC All-In Special kicks off this intriguing storyline. This 80-page flip book is a collaboration between artists Daniel Sampere and Wes Craig. One side will feature Wonder Woman art, while the reverse side will depict Darkseid’s perspective. The groundwork for this tale starts during DC’s ongoing summer crossover event, Absolute Power. As stated by Snyder, “Darkseid will be reintroduced as the most formidable villain in the DC Universe.” This narrative arc concludes with Superman leading a new Justice League into action.

Joshua Williamson has revealed that he will continue writing the monthly “Superman” comic series, with Dan Mora joining him as artist. A sneak peek image unveiled a new Superwoman character, strongly resembling Lois Lane and sporting a modified version of Lois’ Superwoman costume from “All-Star Superman.” Further creative team updates for iconic titles and the upcoming Absolute series are anticipated at Comic-Con.
