As a longtime fan of DC Animated Universe (DCAU) and Kevin Conroy’s iconic portrayal of Batman, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of nostalgia and melancholy upon learning that his final performance as the Dark Knight was in “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part Three.”

It was previously assumed that voice-acting icon Kevin Conroy’s final portrayal of Batman would be in the recent “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” video game, which he recorded before his passing in 2022. However, fortunately for fans, he managed to record one last performance as the Caped Crusader for the animated film “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part Three.” This brief scene featured Conroy’s Batman engaging in a fierce battle with Mark Hamill’s Joker – a poignant farewell for fans. Conroy’s dialogue in this performance seems uncannily prophetic, adding to the emotional impact of his final turn as Gotham City’s protector. In the movie, the image before you is merely a single representation of the destructive power of the villainous Anti-Monitor and his anti-matter wave. Throughout the film, this cataclysmic event leads to the annihilation of numerous universes. This onscreen occurrence draws inspiration from the iconic “Crisis on Infinite Earths” comic series published in 1985 by DC Comics. These events unfolded consistently for the following forty years. The three-part film adaptation of “Crisis,” which is the second such adaptation (following the Arrowverse version in 2019), includes notable cameos from various well-known animated DC universes that have emerged over the decades. We won’t reveal who makes an appearance; you’ll simply have to watch and discover for yourself.

A nice touch fans of the DC Animated Universe will notice is in orbit of the Earth right after the Batman scene is the Justice League Watchtower. The very same one from Justice League Unlimited. That’s because the Earth we see destroyed in the anti-matter wave is Earth-12. That’s the designated home to Bruce Timm’s various animated shows. These include Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, and Justice League Unlimited. This brief scene is a final farewell to an animated universe that remains beloved by DC Comics fans everywhere. Other new DC animated universe will no doubt appear, but Timm’s DCAU, and especially Conroy’s Batman, will forever be the blueprint.
