The initial trailer for the Prime Video series Spider-Noir offered a quick look at Brendan Gleeson as Silvermane, the show’s villain. This character first appeared in a 1969 issue of The Amazing Spider-Man and began as a typical crime boss – a somewhat predictable portrayal of a Sicilian Mafia leader. Created by Stan Lee and John Romita Jr., his real name is Silvio Manfredi, and he earned the name Silvermane due to his strikingly silver hair, which he had even when he was young. Over time, Silvermane became a recurring and challenging enemy for Spider-Man, often considered as formidable as Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin. However, the character has evolved significantly from his original, straightforward depiction.
Silvermane Was a Mob Boss Obsessed with Immortality
When Silvermane first appeared, the story focused on his desperate attempt to achieve immortality. As an aging man determined to hold onto power, he searched for an ancient tablet rumored to grant eternal life. He eventually found it and then coerced Dr. Curt Conners, the Lizard, into creating a youth-restoring serum based on the tablet’s secrets. The serum briefly worked, making Silvermane look like a man in his forties, but the effects didn’t last, and Silvio Manfredi was soon searching for another solution to stop the aging process.

When he was young, Manfredi was a small-time criminal involved in racketeering for the Maggia, which is essentially the Mafia in the Marvel Universe. Stan Lee even said Manfredi was from Corleone, Sicily – a clear nod to The Godfather novel, which had just been published that year. Like the character Vito Corleone, Manfredi climbed the ranks of organized crime to eventually become a powerful Mafia boss. His criminal actions frequently brought him into conflict with Spider-Man and many of Spidey’s foes, such as Norman Osborn and Wilson Fisk. He briefly managed to take control of the villainous organization Hydra, but his leadership there didn’t last long.
In the ’80s, Silvermane Becomes a Cyborg

This typically ruthless mob boss takes a strange turn in the 1980s, delving into experiments that accidentally create the heroes Cloak and Dagger. For a time, he becomes a bigger threat to those two New York heroes than to Spider-Man. After a near-fatal fight with Dagger, he becomes obsessed with achieving immortality. He begins replacing parts of his body with robotic components, transforming himself into a cyborg. He resurfaces in Spider-Man’s world with a plan to take Peter Parker’s unique DNA to improve his remaining human tissue. It seems being a simple mob boss wasn’t enough in the Marvel universe of the 80s and 90s – he needed to become something more powerful. Now, he continues to exist, but only as a detached head.
The Many Animated Appearances of Silvermane

While Silvermane hasn’t been in any live-action Spider-Man movies, he’s shown up in several animated series. He first appeared in the 1981 Spider-Man cartoon, but is best known for his appearances in the popular ’90s Spider-Man: The Animated Series, where Jeff Corey provided his voice as the elderly villain. He’s also been featured in The Spectacular Spider-Man and the 2017 animated Spider-Man series.
Spider-Noir Is the Live-Action Debut of Silvermane

Brendan Gleeson stars as Silvermane, the main villain in Spider-Noir. It’s a great fit, as this darker, 1930s version of Spider-Man aligns well with the comic book character. It’s also probable that using larger villains like Kingpin or Norman Osborn wasn’t an option for the show’s creators. Silvermane’s storyline might involve a quest for eternal life, possibly through finding an ancient relic – think Indiana Jones. We probably won’t see the futuristic cyborg version of the character, as it wouldn’t match the show’s tone. However, if Spider-Noir continues for multiple seasons, anything could happen! It’s exciting to finally see this classic Spider-Man villain get the attention he deserves after twenty years of live-action Spider-Man stories.
Spider-Noir premieres on Prime Video on May 27.
