A sequel to the popular Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt is officially in the works, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The first film was a major success, receiving four Academy Award nominations, and featured Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time F1 champion, as a co-producer. Pitt, age 62, played Sonny Hayes, an experienced driver who makes a comeback to racing with the APXGP team after a long break.
Ever since the movie came out last summer, people have been hoping for a sequel, but there hadn’t been any official news—until now. At a recent Apple TV event, when asked about a follow-up film, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali told fans to “stay tuned” for more information.
Bruckheimer later confirmed they are planning a sequel. While he didn’t share when it might be released or if Brad Pitt would return, he did say he would definitely be involved in choosing the actors.
The first Formula 1 movie was a huge hit, earning $630 million around the world and becoming Apple Original Films’ most successful film in cinemas so far. Filming took place extensively throughout the 2023 and 2024 Formula 1 seasons, and included footage from actual race weekends, such as the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
In a recent interview with the BBC, producer Jerry Bruckheimer discussed the challenges of getting the film made. He explained that production was delayed by a couple of strikes, but ultimately, the movie proved popular with audiences worldwide. Bruckheimer also shared his excitement about working with Brad Pitt for the first time, calling it a ‘thrill’.
He also expressed surprise and delight at the film’s awards recognition.
Jerry Bruckheimer, recently nominated for Top Gun: Maverick, revealed he’s developing several exciting projects. These include sequels to Heat and Days of Thunder, another Top Gun film, and a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. He also mentioned a potentially fascinating project involving UFOs. “We have a lot of projects underway,” he explained, “we’re just waiting for one to have a fantastic script and be ready to go.”
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer talked about the big changes happening in Hollywood, including studio combinations, the rise of artificial intelligence, political influences, and reduced film production. Even with these difficulties, he’s hopeful about the future of movies. He believes the idea that movie theaters are failing isn’t true, stating, “It’s our fault – we haven’t been making the kinds of films people want to see.”
