Apple Buys SEVERANCE Rights; Eyes Summer Start For Season 3

The show Severance is incredibly mind-bending – in a good way! Originally made by one studio for its first two seasons, it’s now moving to Apple Studios, which has acquired the rights from Fifth Season. Fifth Season will still be involved as an executive producer. Plus, production on season three is expected to begin this summer.

Apple TV+’s Severance has become its most-watched show ever, even beating out the incredibly popular Ted Lasso in its second season. Apple purchased the Emmy-winning series from Fifth Season for almost $70 million. The show is known for being intricate, multi-layered, and exciting, both to watch and to make. With Apple now fully in charge, the show is looking forward to its third season.

News about the renewal of Severance first came out in March 2025, and it looks like production is finally getting underway, with a possible summer start date. According to Deadline, despite the show being complex to make, the creative team is aiming to begin filming this summer. Some of the scripts are already finished, while others are still in progress. Dan Erickson is overseeing Severance Season Three as showrunner, but Ben Stiller will not be directing any episodes.

Will Severance Have a Fourth Season? A Fifth?

According to the creators, Kyle Erickson and Dan Stiller, Apple is very likely to approve a fourth season of Severance – it’s almost a done deal. A fifth season is less certain. Erickson and Stiller have said that four seasons were always their initial plan, so any continuation depends on their decision. While a fifth season is up in the air, there’s talk of potential spin-offs or prequel series, which would also be great. Right now, Apple is completely committed to and enthusiastic about season three.
