Angelina Jolie Confesses Which Film Made Her Throw Up

In 1993, a seventeen-year-old Angelina Jolie was hoping to launch her acting career in Hollywood. She quickly accepted a leading role in a sequel to one of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s popular films.

This led to her first professional part in the now-forgotten sci-fi movie Cyborg 2, a film she’s since tried to distance herself from. Jolie played a character called Casella Reese, but was mostly known as “Cash.” The role was typical of nineties sci-fi, featuring a cyborg assassin built to perfectly imitate human feelings. While this allowed the filmmakers to avoid extensive makeup and prosthetics, it didn’t improve the film’s overall quality. The story centers on Cash becoming self-aware and developing a conscience, which causes her to fight back against a dangerous mission.

Jolie has admitted the movie wasn’t the impressive start to her career she’d hoped for. She recently told Buzzfeed that she actually felt sick and threw up the first time she watched the finished film.

She vividly remembered a strong physical reaction to the film, needing her brother’s comfort after watching it. Despite finding a particularly strange scene – her character’s head continuing to talk even after being decapitated – deeply disturbing, she did find one positive aspect. She enjoyed the kickboxing and realized it was her first taste of the physical training that would become central to her career.

It’s ironic that she had such a negative experience with the film, as it unexpectedly led her to the action genre she would later excel in. Although she felt ill watching her first performance, the skills she gained on set were crucial to her future success. From Lara Croft to her roles in Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Wanted, that initial kickboxing experience helped establish her as a leading woman in action films.

I’ve been really fascinated watching Angelina Jolie’s career lately – it feels like she’s entered a really chic, European phase! I just saw photos from the Paris premiere of her new film, Coutures, on February 9th, and she looked incredible in Givenchy. The movie itself, directed by Alice Winocour, is set during Paris Fashion Week and comes out wide on February 18th. Plus, everyone’s still talking about her performance as Maria Callas in Maria, and she’s definitely an awards contender.

It sounds like she has a ton coming up too – a spy thriller with Halle Berry called Maude v Maude, and finally, Maleficent 3! On top of all that, reports say she’s planning to move to Europe this summer once her youngest kids turn eighteen – a big life change! It’s exciting to see her taking on these new roles and embracing a new chapter.
