Christopher Nolan Says This Actor Was The Greatest Casting Choice in ‘The Odyssey’

In early February 2026, while hosting a 70mm IMAX screening of Interstellar at AMC Citywalk in Los Angeles, Christopher Nolan revealed some new information about his next film, The Odyssey.

The director and actor Timothée Chalamet recently held a live question-and-answer session, during which they discussed the ambitious scope of the director’s upcoming film and the difficulties of bringing it to life.

Timothée Chalamet was curious how Christopher Nolan’s previous work prepared him for a film as ambitious as The Odyssey. Nolan responded that making complex movies like Interstellar and Inception gave him the experience and skills necessary to tackle such a large-scale project.

He admitted the new film was incredibly challenging, pushing him to his absolute limit. He explained that while he was prepared enough to finish the project, it was a very close call. The difficulty wasn’t due to disagreements on set, but rather the sheer scope and ambition of the story and the massive scale of the production.

Nolan discussed the film’s technical challenges, revealing that The Odyssey will be his first movie shot entirely using the full 1.43:1 IMAX format. While he’s used IMAX cameras previously, this is the first time he’s been able to maximize the entire screen throughout the whole film. He described the process as difficult but said he felt prepared thanks to his experienced team, including cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema and producer Emma Thomas, who he’s worked with for many years.

A key moment in the discussion was director Nolan’s high praise for Matt Damon, who stars as Odysseus in the film. Nolan emphasized Damon’s crucial role in the production, calling him a true collaborator on set. He explained that Damon brought not only his acting talent, but also his life experience and positive attitude, which helped carry the entire team through the process. Nolan considers casting Damon one of his best decisions and this project marks their third time working together.

The film The Odyssey features a big cast, including Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson. It cost approximately $250 million to make and was filmed in Greece, Italy, and Western Sahara. Initial reactions to early looks at the movie have been very good, with Jonathan Nolan calling it a “tremendous achievement.” Some viewers have even compared it to the grand, sweeping epics made by director David Lean.

Christopher Nolan’s new film was shot completely using IMAX cameras. Check out the trailer for The Odyssey and see it in theaters on July 17th and 26th.
