Mark Ruffalo Opens up About Driving Illegally in Los Angeles for 13 Years

Mark Ruffalo is known for being open and honest, but he recently surprised everyone with a story that sounded like something from a movie. While promoting his new thriller, Crime 101, Ruffalo revealed he was actually a fugitive in Los Angeles for more than ten years – a confession that shocked both his co-stars and those listening. It was a fitting story, considering the film is about daring robberies!

Mark Ruffalo, the actor known for his role in Marvel films, playfully wondered if there were any police officers nearby before confessing he drove with a suspended license for thirteen years. Surprisingly, he also admitted to having an outstanding arrest warrant during that entire period. Ruffalo explained that the constant worry about being stopped and arrested actually made him an incredibly careful driver – he was too scared to even accidentally commit a traffic violation, making him, in his words, the best driver in Los Angeles.

Things came to a head when his wife discovered the warrant. She was furious about the legal trouble and warned him she’d leave if he didn’t get his life in order. She needed to be with someone responsible and capable of handling basic things, like having a current driver’s license.

Worried about losing his wife, Ruffalo went to court and explained his situation to the judge. He admitted he’d been struggling with depression and financial hardship as an actor, and the judge gave him a light fine. He paid what he owed, cleared his record, and was relieved to have avoided jail – and, most importantly, to have saved his marriage.

February is shaping up to be a very busy month for Mark Ruffalo. His new movie, Crime 101, comes out on February 13th. It’s a thrilling heist story that brings him back together with Chris Hemsworth, his Avengers co-star. Interestingly, Ruffalo plays a determined detective hunting a diamond thief – a role that playfully references a real-life confession he made, and Hemsworth plays the thief.

The movie features a large cast, with Halle Berry playing an insurance broker and Barry Keoghan as a dangerous criminal, along with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Nick Nolte. Director Bart Layton is receiving positive early reviews for creating a 1990s Los Angeles vibe.

Mark Ruffalo has been actively promoting the film, attending premieres in both London and Los Angeles. In addition to this new release, Ruffalo also stars in the sci-fi film Mickey 17, directed by Bong Joon-ho, which came out earlier in 2025 and is now available to stream.
