Angelina Jolie shares her thoughts on ‘scars,’ adding meaning to her life
After discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene, which increases the risk of breast cancer, she underwent a double mastectomy in 2013. She felt it was the best course of action for her health. “I don’t strive for a flawless life without challenges,” she explained. “My scars represent a deliberate choice I made to prioritize my health and spend as much time as possible with my children.”
Angelina Jolie explained that she embraces her scars, as they motivated her to take control of her health. This was particularly meaningful for her, having lost her mother at a young age and wanting to be a strong presence for her own children without a grandmother in their lives.
She explained that scars are a sign of a life well-lived, saying, ‘If you reach the end of your life without having made big mistakes or messes – without any scars – then you haven’t truly lived.’
The actress previously shared that genetic testing showed her risk of developing breast cancer dropped dramatically from 87% to just 5%. To further lower her cancer risk, she also chose to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to prevent ovarian cancer.
The actress and her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, have six children together: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne.
