Nicolas Cage Goes Full Film Noir in New ‘Spider-Noir’ Images & Details

Sony has revealed more about Spider-Noir, giving fans a fresh look at its gritty, detective-style version of Spider-Man. The game is heavily inspired by classic film noir, with a strong emphasis on that aesthetic.

Nicolas Cage as a Noir-Era Web-Slinger

The series stars Nicolas Cage as a weary private investigator in a Depression-era New York.

This isn’t the Spider-Man you’re used to. Nicolas Cage stars as Ben Reilly, a more experienced and world-weary hero nicknamed “The Spider.” He’s swapped playful jokes for a more cynical attitude and now sports a fedora.

New photos released in Esquire magazine showcase the show’s dimly lit offices, wet city streets, and Nicolas Cage completely embodying the role of a classic detective.

Producer Phil Miller described this version of Peter Parker as a significant departure from the film characterizations, noting he’s older, more cynical, and willing to resort to violence, even when intoxicated. Chris Lord explained that this Peter has already experienced a major disillusionment – a ‘Chinatown’ moment – long before the story begins.

Black-and-White… or Color

One of the big hooks: Spider-Noir will be available in two formats.

The film is available in two distinct styles: a striking black-and-white, reminiscent of old film noir, and a colorized version that looks like vintage films brought to life with color. Importantly, both versions were filmed at the same time, rather than created through post-production effects.

Nicolas Cage explains that both the color and black-and-white versions of the film are effective and visually appealing, each in its own way. He believes the vibrant color will especially attract younger audiences, but he also wants to offer the classic black-and-white option, hoping it will inspire them to explore older films and appreciate the artistry of that format.

Oren Uziel, a co-showrunner on Spider-Noir, explained that the show’s visual style was inspired by old black and white films with a touch of colorization. He said, “It looks like a black and white film that’s been kind of colorized.”

Femme Fatales and Familiar Faces

The show features Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy, a nightclub singer who exudes a classic, mysterious allure. It also presents fresh, noir-inspired takes on Marvel favorites like Robbie Robertson.

Uziel describes Robbie and Ben as longtime partners and investigators with a strong friendship. However, they have very different outlooks on life. Robbie is an optimist who believes in luck and expects things to turn out well, while Ben is a cynic who anticipates failure and expects the worst. This difference in perspective often creates tension between them – Robbie’s hopefulness clashes with Ben’s pessimism.

The cast leans into classic detective archetypes while still pulling from Spider-Man history.

Karen Rodriguez portrays Janet, a new character on the show who is known for being incredibly helpful. She’s been likened to the character Effie from the film The Maltese Falcon.

Li Jun Li stars as Cat Hardy, a singer at a nightclub who draws Reilly into the central mystery of the show.

What is Spider-Noir about?

The story follows Silvermane, a dangerous crime boss who has repeatedly survived attempts on his life.

Reilly’s simple case quickly becomes much more complex when he discovers evidence of extraordinary forces at play. He encounters an arsonist who can seemingly conjure flames with his own hands and faces dangerous confrontations with tough criminals like Flint Marko.

When and Where It Streams

Spider-Noir will debut this spring on MGM+ in the United States, and will be available to stream worldwide on Prime Video.
