The popular 1987 horror-comedy film The Lost Boys is now becoming a Broadway musical. Producers revealed plans for the stage adaptation last year, and now Entertainment Weekly has given us a first look at the cast. Ali Louis Bourzgui will play the vampire gang leader David (originally played by Kiefer Sutherland), LJ Benet will star as Michael (previously Jason Patric’s role), and Maria Wirries will play Star, a character once portrayed by Jami Gertz.
The musical adaptation of The Lost Boys stays true to the original movie’s core story, but with a key change: the vampires of Santa Carla are now a rock band instead of a biker gang. (It’s a very Interview with the Vampire vibe!). According to Ali Louis Bourzgui, the musical blends “sexy vampire glam rock” with a heartfelt story about family and overcoming adversity. He specifically mentioning a “glam rock band” indicates the show will likely be set in the 1980s. You can hear the cast perform a song from the show, “If We Make It Through the Night,” below.
The rest of the cast features familiar faces from the original 1980s film. Shoshana Bean, known for playing Elphaba in Wicked, steps into the role of single mother Lucy Emerson, a part previously played by Dianne Wiest. Benjamin Pajak will play Sam, Michael’s younger brother, who was originally portrayed by the late Cory Haim. Paul Alexander Nolan is Max, the video store owner hiding a secret. Jennifer Duka and Miguel Gil are taking on the roles of the vampire-hunting Frog Brothers, and Brian Flores, Sean Grandillo, and Dean Maupin complete the group of lost boys. It’s still unknown who will play the memorable saxophone player from the Santa Carla boardwalk, but fans are hoping he’ll be included. Hopefully, this musical version of The Lost Boys will be more successful than other vampire musicals that haven’t fared well in recent years.
