Palantir: A Comedy of Valuation

Hark, gentle investors, and lend an ear to a tale most curious! Palantir Technologies, a name whispered with both reverence and a touch of suspicion, has lately been the subject of much speculation. But let us not be deceived by mere numbers; for in the realm of finance, as in the theatre, appearances often belie the truth. Three years hence, this company did ascend to heights most impressive, a veritable rocket propelled by the winds of artificial intelligence. Indeed, a fortunate few, those early patrons of this digital enterprise, have likely found their coffers considerably enriched. One might even venture to say they’ve achieved a state of comfortable affluence, a condition not unfamiliar to the characters in my comedies.
Yet, as is often the case with fortunes built upon such airy foundations, a certain…stagnation has set in. Shares, once soaring like a well-trained falcon, now seem content to circle, having shed a tenth of their value this year. One is compelled to ask: is this merely a temporary pause, a dramatic beat before the next act, or a harbinger of a more substantial decline? Let us, therefore, delve deeper into this most perplexing of financial dramas.
The Illusion of Progress
From its humble beginnings in the year 2003, Palantir has established a reputation, shall we say, for discerning patterns within the chaotic sea of data. Its software, a most ingenious creation, allows its clients to extract meaning from the seemingly meaningless, to detect fraud, to improve efficiency. A worthy pursuit, to be sure, though one must always question the motives of those who wield such power.
And, alas, the company’s services have not been confined to the realm of commerce. Its software has found application in areas far more…contentious: law enforcement, military targeting, even the enforcement of immigration laws. During the previous administration, its presence was particularly notable, though one might say, not without a degree of controversy.
can this momentum be sustained?
The company’s reputation was initially built upon government contracts, but its work with businesses has become increasingly important. This is a beneficial trend, as it opens up a much larger addressable market, both in the United States and abroad. However, it remains to be seen whether Palantir can maintain its competitive advantage.
In the past, its ability to withstand criticism and political pressure has given it an edge over competitors such as Alphabet’s Google, which withdrew from certain military contracts due to internal employee dissent. But this advantage may be less pronounced in the private sector, and could even prove to be a liability if its work becomes too politically divisive.
Palantir also faces competition from other data analytics companies, such as Microsoft and Snowflake, which are also incorporating generative AI into their services. A crowded stage, indeed, and one where only the most agile and innovative players will survive.
A Millionaire-Maker? A Question of Vanity
On the surface, Palantir appears to offer everything a growth investor could desire: cutting-edge technology, a vast addressable market, and rapidly growing sales. But let us not be blinded by the glitter of innovation. An excellent company is not always an excellent stock. With a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 158, shares trade at a substantial premium over the S&P 500 average of just 22. A most extravagant valuation, and one that leaves little room for error.
Palantir stock is unlikely to make anyone a millionaire at current prices. Investors who still wish to wager on the company would be wise to wait for a more favorable entry point before committing their funds. For, as I have often observed in my comedies, the pursuit of wealth, without prudence and foresight, is a most foolish endeavor. It is a vanity, a delusion, and a source of endless disappointment.
