Netflix Originals That Were Cancelled After One Season

Netflix is known for having a huge collection of original shows and movies, covering all kinds of genres. Some of these shows become very popular and last for many seasons, but others are canceled quickly. Often, high costs and how many people watch a show lead to these cancellations, even if fans really loved them. This list highlights a variety of shows that only got one season before being removed from Netflix.

‘1899’ (2022)

The team behind the hit show ‘Dark’ is back with a new, complex mystery. This one takes place on a steamship crossing the Atlantic, where passengers from all walks of life encounter a vanished ship and a chain of strange, mind-bending events. The story centers on psychological mysteries and questions what’s real versus what’s imagined. Unfortunately, despite a lot of excitement and detailed world-building, the series wasn’t renewed for a second season, leaving some storylines unresolved.

‘The Midnight Club’ (2022)

This show follows eight young adults with terminal illnesses who live in a hospice and spend their evenings telling each other scary stories. They make a deal: whoever dies first will try to contact the others from the afterlife. Inspired by Christopher Pike’s novels, the series blends supernatural horror with a look at what it means to face death. The first season ended with many mysteries still surrounding the history of the Brightcliffe Home.

‘Cowboy Bebop’ (2021)

This live-action series, based on the popular anime, centers on a team of bounty hunters traveling the solar system to capture criminals. As Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, and Faye Valentine pursue rewards to fund their ship, they also grapple with their own troubled pasts. The show aimed to recreate the feel of the original with exciting, visually striking action and a jazz-inspired score. Unfortunately, it was cancelled soon after its debut due to a mixed response from both critics and fans.

‘Jupiter’s Legacy’ (2021)

The story focuses on the clash between original superheroes and their children, who have a more cynical outlook. After decades of protecting the world, the older heroes find it difficult to share their strict moral rules with a new generation. The show alternates between flashbacks to the 1930s, when the heroes first gained their powers, and the complicated world of today. Ultimately, the series was cancelled due to high expenses and changes in the creative team.

‘I Am Not Okay with This’ (2020)

Sydney is a high school student navigating the challenges of adolescence and grieving the loss of her father. She unexpectedly develops powerful telekinetic abilities that surface when she’s under emotional pressure. The show combines typical teen drama with supernatural mystery as Sydney learns to manage her newfound powers. Although critics liked the show, production was unfortunately stopped due to the pandemic and increasing costs.

‘The Society’ (2019)

A group of teens suddenly find themselves in an exact copy of their town, but all the adults are gone. They have to create their own society and rules to survive and figure out how to get home. The show looks at how power works and the difficult choices people face when starting over from nothing. Although a second season was planned, it was later cancelled due to problems with filming.

‘Archive 81’ (2022)

A film archivist working to repair old VHS tapes from the 90s becomes fixated on a filmmaker who disappeared. He uncovers a frightening link between the tapes and a strange cult that used to live in one particular apartment building. Despite being very popular initially, the show only lasted one season.

‘First Kill’ (2022)

Juliette, a teenage vampire, and Calliope, a monster hunter, find love even though their families have been rivals for generations. Both are about to attempt their first kill to earn their place within their supernatural communities. This series puts a fresh, modern spin on the classic ‘star-crossed lovers’ story with plenty of action, and while it built a strong fanbase online, it didn’t get enough viewers to continue for another season.

‘Resident Evil’ (2022)

This series, based on the popular video game, tells the story of two sisters in a futuristic city ruled by the Umbrella Corporation. The story jumps between their happy childhood in a seemingly perfect corporate world and a later, monster-filled wasteland. It explores how the deadly T-virus started and the hidden corporate actions that caused society to fall apart. Unfortunately, the show faced a lot of criticism for changing the original story and was quickly cancelled after it first aired.

‘The Get Down’ (2016–2017)

This musical drama takes place in the South Bronx in the late 1970s and follows a group of teenagers as hip hop is born. Director Baz Luhrmann blends real historical events with energetic musical performances and a unique visual style. The story captures the moment when disco faded and a fresh, street-inspired sound took over New York City. The show was incredibly expensive to produce, becoming one of the most costly ever made for the platform.

‘Girlboss’ (2017)

Based on the real life story of Sophia Amoruso, this series tells the story of a headstrong young woman who creates a successful fashion business starting from her home. She finds she loves selling vintage clothes online and learns how to build a company despite having no prior experience. The show highlights the hard work and perseverance needed to thrive in the fast-paced world of online fashion. While the main character received varied reactions, the show was ultimately cancelled after one season of thirteen episodes.

‘Everything Sucks!’ (2018)

This funny and heartwarming series takes place in the small town of Boring, Oregon, in the mid-1990s. It follows a group of high school students who don’t quite fit in – members of the A/V and drama clubs – as they team up to make a movie. Along the way, they deal with the challenges of growing up, figuring out who they are, and finding where they belong, all before the internet became a big part of life. While the show gained a dedicated fanbase thanks to its genuine story and great music from the era, it was unfortunately canceled after just one season.

‘Teenage Bounty Hunters’ (2020)

Sisters Sterling and Blair, who are fraternal twins, unexpectedly find themselves working with a professional bounty hunter to catch people who’ve skipped bail. They juggle this exciting, secret job with the demands of attending a private Christian high school and their everyday lives. The show is funny and uses satire to look at religion, the bond between sisters, and Southern traditions. Even though critics loved it and it had a loyal following, the series was surprisingly cancelled.

‘Lockwood & Co.’ (2023)

This show follows three teenagers – two boys and a girl – who have psychic powers and run their own ghost-hunting business. Without any adults to guide them, they uncover a large-scale conspiracy behind a surge in supernatural activity. Inspired by Jonathan Stroud’s book series, the show is known for its Victorian setting and exciting action. While praised for its detailed world and the strong connection between the main characters, it was unfortunately cancelled after one season.

‘The Brothers Sun’ (2024)

Unaware of his family’s criminal past, the brother is quickly thrown into a dangerous world and forced to learn how to survive. ‘Kaos’ (2024)

This show offers a fresh take on Greek mythology, centering on Zeus and his growing fear of losing control over humanity. As different people around the globe uncover their connection to an age-old prophecy, the fate of the gods hangs in the balance. With a darkly humorous approach, the series examines themes of power, corruption, and the gods’ own pride. Unfortunately, it was canceled soon after its first season ended on a shocking cliffhanger.

‘Dead Boy Detectives’ (2024)

As a huge fan of DC comics and supernatural mysteries, I was really excited about this show! It follows two ghosts who decide they’d rather stick around and solve spooky cases than move on to the afterlife. They team up with a young woman who can see the future, and together they tackle some seriously powerful witches and angry spirits. What’s cool is it’s set in the same world as ‘The Sandman,’ and it has this really unique, kind of dark and quirky visual style. Critics seemed to genuinely enjoy the inventive stories, but sadly, it didn’t get enough viewers to keep it going, which is a real shame.

‘Obliterated’ (2023)

After successfully disarming a bomb in Las Vegas, an elite special forces team lets loose with a huge party. They quickly realize the bomb was a fake, and now, while still heavily intoxicated, they have to find the real one. The movie is an over-the-top action comedy filled with stunts and adult humor that was popular for several weeks, but it wasn’t renewed for another season.

‘Blockbuster’ (2022)

The owner of the very last Blockbuster Video is fighting to keep his store open, even though most people now watch movies and shows online. He and his eccentric employees try to create a welcoming space for movie lovers who still enjoy the experience of browsing physical copies. Ironically, a comedy series about the store’s struggles aired on a popular streaming service, but it didn’t attract enough viewers and was cancelled after just ten episodes.

‘The Imperfects’ (2022)

After a risky new gene therapy goes wrong, three young people are transformed into monsters. They join forces to track down the scientist who changed them and demand a cure. The show combines sci-fi elements with classic superhero themes, giving its characters powers drawn from mythology. Unfortunately, it didn’t attract a large audience despite appealing to the young adult demographic.

‘Hit & Run’ (2021)

A man’s quest to uncover the truth behind his wife’s death leads him into a world of international danger, spanning from Tel Aviv to New York. He soon realizes his wife lived a double life, and someone powerful is determined to keep him from finding out what really happened. This thrilling story is packed with action and features a complicated plot involving various government agencies. Unfortunately, the story concludes with a major unresolved question, leaving the ending open-ended.

‘The Irregulars’ (2021)

This series, set in Victorian London, follows a group of streetwise teens who solve supernatural mysteries for Doctor Watson and the enigmatic Sherlock Holmes. While the famous detective struggles with his abilities, the teenagers take the initiative on perilous investigations. The show offers a fresh, spooky take on the classic Sherlock Holmes stories with updated characters. Despite a strong debut and high viewership initially, it was unfortunately cancelled soon after its release.

‘Cursed’ (2020)

This series offers a fresh take on the Arthurian story, centering on Nimue, a gifted young woman who will become the Lady of the Lake. She teams up with a mercenary named Arthur to seek out Merlin and deliver a powerful, ancient sword. Told through a fantasy setting, the show examines issues like religious persecution and environmental destruction. While visually impressive, it unfortunately wasn’t popular enough to continue beyond one season.

‘Away’ (2020)

A US astronaut embarks on a dangerous three-year mission to Mars, leaving her family – her husband and daughter – behind. The show explores the difficulties of maintaining relationships over vast distances and the physical hardships of space travel, blending personal stories with the complex science of the journey. Despite a compelling lead performance, the series was ultimately cancelled due to its expensive production costs.

‘Spinning Out’ (2020)

A figure skater tries to reignite her career after a serious injury by teaming up with a promising partner in pairs skating. She faces the difficulties of managing bipolar disorder and a complex family situation while pursuing her athletic goals. Though it gained a dedicated following, efforts to bring the show back were ultimately unsuccessful.

‘Messiah’ (2020)

A CIA officer begins investigating a man who becomes famous for seemingly performing miracles. The show looks at how people around the world respond to someone claiming divine power, and the resulting upheaval it causes. It examines themes of faith, false information, and the influence of social media, all from a global viewpoint. Unfortunately, due to controversial content and challenges during production, the series only lasted one season.

‘Grand Army’ (2020)

As a total film and TV buff, I was really captivated by this show about five high school students in Brooklyn. It honestly felt so real, diving into the complex stuff they were dealing with – things like race, figuring out their identities, and the pressures of growing up with financial hardship. It didn’t shy away from tough issues and showed a very raw, honest look at what it’s like to be a teenager today, fighting for a better future. Everyone in the cast was fantastic, and their performances really drew me in. It’s a shame it got canceled, though. I heard there were some problems behind the scenes and it just didn’t quite find the big audience it deserved.

‘Tiny Pretty Things’ (2020)

As a film and TV enthusiast, I recently checked out this show set in the super competitive world of a Chicago ballet academy. It follows these incredibly talented young dancers all vying for a place in a professional company, and things take a dark turn when the lead dancer seemingly has an accident. The story then centers around her replacement, who quickly realizes this isn’t just about dance – it’s a world full of secrets, backstabbing, and a whole lot of lies. It’s a really interesting mix of teen drama and a murder mystery, and the dance sequences are fantastic. Sadly, despite all that, critics were pretty divided, and the show wasn’t picked up for another season, which is a shame.

‘V Wars’ (2019)

When an ancient virus causes people to become vampires, a scientist finds himself opposing his closest friend. This sparks a large-scale conflict between humans and the new vampire population. The show aimed to present vampires through the lens of realistic science and political intrigue. Unfortunately, it was cancelled, along with other science fiction programs, when the streaming service changed its programming focus.

‘Daybreak’ (2019)

After a nuclear disaster turns California into a wasteland, a group of high school students struggles to survive amongst dangerous mutated creatures and rival gangs. The main character searches for his lost girlfriend, and frequently addresses the audience directly to explain how this new, broken world works. The show is funny and doesn’t take itself seriously, playfully poking fun at common themes found in post-apocalyptic stories. Unfortunately, despite its unique style, it wasn’t renewed for another season.

‘Chambers’ (2019)

A teenage girl who received a heart transplant starts exhibiting the personality of the person who died to donate it, leading her to investigate the circumstances surrounding their death. Her search uncovers a web of dark secrets hidden by a powerful family. The show, a psychological horror exploring themes of identity and the strange connection between organs and personality, was unfortunately cancelled after ten episodes due to low ratings.

‘The Good Cop’ (2018)

This comedy series follows a by-the-book police officer and his retired, rule-bending father. The father constantly offers unhelpful advice on the son’s cases, creating funny and messy complications. The show has a classic, procedural style of crime-solving, but unfortunately, it was cancelled after just one season despite being one of the platform’s few comedies.

‘Seven Seconds’ (2018)

In Jersey City, a white police officer unintentionally hits and runs a Black teenager, leading to a large-scale cover-up and heightened racial tensions. A prosecutor partners with the teenager’s family to fight for justice against a flawed legal system. The series explores the emotional toll of this tragedy and the deeper problems within the police department. While originally planned as a single season, talks about continuing the show ultimately didn’t lead to anything.

‘Gypsy’ (2017)

This psychological thriller follows a therapist who crosses professional lines by becoming dangerously involved with the loved ones of her patients. She creates a false identity to get close to them, manipulating their lives to fulfill her own needs. Despite featuring a well-known actress, the show was quickly cancelled after it premiered.

‘The Midnight Gospel’ (2020)

This animated series follows a space-faring interviewer who visits worlds nearing their end to record conversations with their inhabitants for his podcast. Known for its dreamlike and colorful animation, the show explores big questions about life, death, and spirituality. Created by the creator of ‘Adventure Time,’ the dialogue was actually based on real podcast recordings. Unfortunately, fans were saddened when the platform cancelled the show after one season.

‘Q-Force’ (2021)

This animated comedy follows a team of LGBTQ+ spies who feel overlooked by their agency. When they take matters into their own hands to crack a big international case, they hope to prove their worth and gain the respect of their coworkers. The show playfully pokes fun at both spy movie clichés and aspects of queer culture. While it had some positive reactions, it wasn’t renewed for another season.

‘Hard Cell’ (2022)

This show uses a documentary style to follow the lives of women in prison, both inmates and staff. A versatile comedian plays several roles, including the prison governor and various inmates, each with their own unique personality. The series balances comedy and drama as the women work together to put on a musical performance. Unfortunately, after airing six episodes, the show wasn’t renewed for another season.

‘Partner Track’ (2022)
