A fresh take on “The Fantastic Four” is approaching, and this time, it’s not just a comic book adaptation – it’s colossal, both figuratively and literally. Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster, titled “Fantastic Four: First Steps“, is slated for release in July 2025, and one of the most exciting aspects about it is the inclusion of Galactus.
In my latest film review, I can’t stress enough how this character stands out – it’s not merely his significance within the narrative, but also his colossal physical presence. To give you an idea, he dwarfs the skyscrapers of New York City in a striking scene from the movie, leaving a lasting impression on viewers like myself.
On previous occasions, Marvel has rebooted the Fantastic Four, but this new adaptation presents a unique take, both in appearance and atmosphere. Instead of retracing the traditional origin narrative, it leaps straight into the heart of the action. The ensemble cast consists of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, portraying the legendary team. In this rendition, they’re pitted against Galactus and the Silver Surfer in a battle that reaches beyond our universe.
Ralph Ineson, recognized for his powerful, gravelly voice, portrays Galactus. Unlike many typical villains, Ineson views Galactus as more of a deity. In an interview, he explained, “‘He’s like a kind of god… a colossal, world-consuming entity, just doing what a colossal, world-consuming entity does.’
To get ready for his part, he isolated himself on rooftops, reflecting silently on ways to portray a being that’s existed for billions of years.
Matt Shakman, the director, described Galactus as a “massive, 14-billion-year-old cosmic vampire who devours planets.” To stay true to the character’s comic book appearance, Marvel is avoiding the use of space clouds, as seen in the 2007 film. This new Galactus will sport bold purple and blue armor, with a physical suit being created for Ineson to wear on set rather than relying solely on digital effects.
The film boasts a distinct aesthetic as well. It’s situated in a universe reminiscent of the 1960s, yet it incorporates advanced technology and fashion that is futuristic. Kevin Feige, the chief of Marvel Studios, has been insistent on this blend of retro and futurism. He was also the driving force behind including Galactus in the movie. To ensure the team captured the right ambiance, Feige shared with them scenes featuring Galactus from Fortnite Battle Royale, where the character made a significant appearance.
In summer through fall of 2024, production for the film took place in both England and Spain. The crew relied heavily on practical effects and meticulously considered the aesthetics, resulting in a unique, retro-inspired look that distinguishes it among other Marvel movies.
Galactus isn’t merely a one-time villain in the story; he plays a significant role, not only due to his immense size but also because of his timeless presence. The filmmakers aimed to portray him as an authentic embodiment of nature’s raw power, something that has been perpetually present. Ineson’s performance is designed to reveal Galactus as calm, powerful, and ancient.
As the imminent launch approaches, fans can’t wait to find out how the Fantastic Four will tackle such a massive challenge. Additionally, there’s great anticipation for Ralph Ineson’s portrayal of the colossal cosmic entity. If early previews are any indication, Galactus is set to make a lasting impact on the Marvel universe.
