One Sensitive ‘Superman’ Scene Got Cut by James Gunn After Negative Test Screening Response

The upcoming Superman film is almost here, but a particular scene featuring Superman’s dog, Krypto, was ultimately left out. Based on reports from two actors in the movie, test viewers found this scene unappealing. Having completed his tenure with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise at Marvel, Director James Gunn, now steering the DC Universe, chose to delete the scene following unfavorable reactions during previews.

In this new take on the story, we meet a freshly minted Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet, alongside returning favorites such as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. Additionally, there are some unexpected characters joining the cast, like Krypto the Superdog, who makes an appearance in trailers and is expected to feature in some thrilling action sequences.

In an interview with Jake’s Takes, actresses María Gabriela de Faría (Engineer) and Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher) revealed a scene cut from the final version of the film. This scene depicted Ultraman, a malevolent take on Superman, striking Krypto during a battle. It appears that viewers in a test screening reacted negatively to this action.

During the interview, Sampaio expressed, “They created a more problematic moment.” Faría agreed, saying, “Yes, yes.” Sampaio continued, “Nick [Hoult] and I were slightly frustrated about it, but we understand.” When asked about what was taken out, she clarified, “They took out Ultraman punching Superdog (Krypto), as it didn’t perform well in test screenings.” Faria chimed in, “It’s not acceptable. You don’t hit a dog… No, I did not strike the dog. The dog attacked me first.

James Gunn isn’t new to scenes involving animals that can tug at your heartstrings or make you squirm, like Rocket’s backstory in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, the scene featuring Ultraman and Krypto didn’t carry the same emotional punch. Instead, it was more a typical fight sequence that didn’t resonate as strongly with the audience.

Despite being omitted from a particular scene, Krypto is still set to appear in the movie and will have his moment to shine. Faria hinted that her character experiences an encounter with the dog (Krypto), so Superdog won’t be bystander in this film. The decision was made to excise the part where he gets hit, as test audiences found it too intense.

On July 11, 2025, the movie titled “Superman” will be released, featuring David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. This is the inaugural film of the new DC Universe, known as Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The plot revolves around Superman’s struggle to navigate his dual identities – his Kryptonian roots and his life on Earth. Filming for this movie took place in Norway, Georgia, and Ohio.
