Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are planning to collaborate once more, with their upcoming project titled “Deeper“. As per various sources, filming is slated to commence in August, and Tom Cruise will be sharing the screen with Ana de Armas. The production house behind this venture is Warner Bros., and it’s speculated to have a substantial budget, estimated to be approximately $200 million, as reported by Deadline.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of “Deeper” for quite some time now. The initial screenplay was penned by Max Landis as far back as 2016, and since then, it has garnered significant attention. Over the years, a number of high-profile names have been associated with this project. At one point, Bradley Cooper, Idris Elba, and Gal Gadot were rumored to be involved. Furthermore, directors such as Kornél Mundruczó and Baltasar Kormákur have also been linked to the project at various stages. However, despite these connections, the project has yet to move forward.
Currently, the movie is progressing and Tom Cruise will be starring as the main character. In this role, he’ll portray an astronaut who has fallen from grace, embarking on a perilous deep-sea expedition to investigate a recently discovered ocean trench. However, once he reaches the bottom, events take a sinister turn.
In simpler terms, the movie features a mysterious and potentially perilous power hidden deep below, categorized as a supernatural thriller by its director, Liman. He’s expressed his enthusiasm for creating something frightening, mentioning that this will be his first time doing so, and also Tom’s (presumably a different character or person involved in the project) first time as well.
Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas are currently undergoing scuba diving training in preparation for their upcoming movie. This film is rumored to be Cruise’s next project and may possibly hit theaters before his collaboration with Alejandro González Iñárritu, which is set for release in October 2026.
Christopher McQuarrie, who often works with Tom Cruise, has wrapped up the final version of the screenplay for the movie “Deeper“. Reports from production insiders suggest that this latest draft is now all set for filming.
Despite initially spending a substantial amount on the script, MGM abandoned the project following the emergence of severe accusations against Max Landis. Later on, the script underwent revisions and was transferred to Warner Bros., where it’s now receiving a new lease of life with Liman directing and Cruise taking on the lead role.
This marks their third collaboration, following the productions of “Edge of Tomorrow” and “American Made”. Currently, they’re also planning an exciting venture, which includes shooting in space through partnerships with NASA and SpaceX. However, this film is yet to progress beyond its development phase.
Liman, fresh from the success of his remake “Road House” and Apple TV+’s heist movie “The Instigators”, is set to continue these stories with upcoming sequels. Meanwhile, Cruise has completed “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” and rumors swirl about a potential return for a follow-up to his 1990 racing film, “Days of Thunder”.
According to current plans, “Deeper” is expected to commence filming this coming summer. Given the stellar cast and substantial budget, it’s poised to generate quite a buzz as one of the highly anticipated films currently in production.
